New Afghan law worries Nato chief

Source: BBC

Nato's head says it could be difficult to persuade European countries to contribute more troops to Afghanistan because of controversial new laws.
Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said the planned laws violated human rights and were unjustifiable when Nato troops were dying to protect universal values.
Critics say the law limits the rights of women from the Shia minority and authorises rape within marriage.
Aides to President Karzai insist the law provides more protection for women.

1. dont worry, the USA will come to the rescue
and send OUR kids over there in droves..human rights violations never stopped the good old USA from killing their own boys and girls for insane corporate occupations of other countries..especially if we install little puppet govt poseurs like the one we have in afghanistan. other countries have integrity and wont send their young people to fight for corporations?
dont fear! the USA will send anyone who is BREATHING to die for THEIR corporate masters.

5. Afghan law legalizes marital rape, critics say
Source: Seattle Times via Associated Press

KABUL — A new Afghan law makes it legal for men to rape their wives, human-rights groups and some Afghan lawmakers said Thursday, accusing President Hamid Karzai of signing the legislation to bolster his re-election prospects.

Critics worry the legislation undermines hard-won rights for women enacted after the fall of the Taliban's Islamist regime.

The law — which some lawmakers said was never debated in parliament — is intended to regulate family life inside Afghanistan's Shiite community, which makes up about 20 percent of the country of 30 million people. The law does not affect Afghan Sunnis.

...

"As long as the husband is not traveling, he has the right to have sexual intercourse with his wife every fourth night," Article 132 of the law says. "Unless the wife is ill or has any kind of illness that intercourse could aggravate, the wife is bound to give a positive response to the sexual desires of her husband."

8. No
The US needs a puppet and Karzai is the only one that can be controlled. The only way that he gets tossed is if the Afghan people do it in the upcoming elections.
