Geithner denies White House sidestepping CEO pay limits
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner denied on Sunday the Obama administration was crafting bailout initiatives to allow companies to evade limits on executive pay and other restrictions imposed by Congress.

"No, that's not true," Geithner said when asked about a report in Saturday's Washington Post that the White House was trying to allow some exceptions.

"Now, our obligation is to apply the laws that Congress just passed on executive compensation and we're going to do that," he told the CBS program "Face the Nation."

5. Their Plan Appears to be
to reduce compensation going forward, but not try to interfere with bonuses already awarded. That's what the Chris Dodd thing was about.

6. Geithner is lying.
Edited on Sun Apr-05-09 07:24 PM by Marie26
What an ass. I can't even stand to look at him. I hope you all notice the generous leeway Geithner left in that statement - they're going to apply the law as written; and if that law left a few loopholes that they can use to funnel executive bonuses through a third party, well then they'll do that too. A few weeks ago, when Geithner was first asked about the AIG bonuses, he said that he only learned the "full extent" of the AIG bonuses that week. "Full extent" were the key weasel words there. Of course it came out later that Geithner was the one pressuring Congress to remove any limits on AIG bonuses. He said "full extent" so that he could always claim later that he wasn't, technically, lying in his earlier denial. Now Congress passes limits on Wall St. bonuses over Treasury's objections, so Geithner will just find a new way to launder the money & funnel it to Wall St. executives anyway. It's like Enron's suddenly running the Treasury Dept.

7. How did we end up with two losers like Geithner and Summer? They
must go! Get Paul O'Neill. He had integrity, which was why Cheney got rid of him.

15. ...and you're at best naive...if not simply ignorant of the big picture...
...it isn't Dems vs Republicans--it's Republican-light (DLC) vs even worse, Repukes.

What other explanation do you have for Geithner's plans/behavior?? http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x296018

11. I don't believe him.
The MSM would never lie to us. What reason could they possibly have for spreading lies about a Democratic administration? They're liberal for goodness sakes!

13. Yeah it's kinda pathetic
how some will take anonymous sources from MSM over the White House. In the least people should be taking a wait and see approch if they follow through.

14. Is Rove at it again????
On one hand this story is possibly true, and if so I'll be pissed off.

On the other hand is it just possible that the story was planted by right wingers? So far I've only seen one source for this claim. Kind of sounds like something Rove would pull ... keep pushing lies and sooner or later one will find some traction. Doesn't anyone remember how Clinton was treated? Only problem is that he eventually gave the right wingers all the ammunition they needed (although that was in no way related to anything that was the least bit relevant to running the country).

Why aren't you telling AIG to prepare for Bankruptcy, oh wait, AIG doesn't have a Union.
