Douglas vetos same-sex bill
Edited on Mon Apr-06-09 05:20 PM by FreeState
Source: Burlington Free Press

MONTPELIER — Gov. Jim Douglas has vetoed legislation that would allow gay and lesbian couples to marry in Vermont.

The governor’s veto came moments after the state Senate voted to concur with a House gay marriage bill that was passed last week.

...snip...

In his message, Douglas says even if the bill were to become law, federal benefits would still be denied to same-sex couples in Vermont.

The House and Senate are expected to try to override the governor’s veto on Tuesday.

Just an FYI Vermont Dems in the house by several reports only need ONE more vote to override. If you live in Vermont please call your rep and support Marriage Equality today!

Edit to add: see this link on which Dems to call - you dont need to be a resident of Vermont - everyone should be calling!

6. This Glib Repub.'s Halycon Reign in VT Is Now History!!
I do believe this is the first step in his demise, because his teflon image is now in jeopardy. He has never taken a clear stand on a half way controversial issue---but here, at the expense of gays and lesbians, he has "dared" to take a stand. And may he be dogged wherever he goes in the state that has made his reign so comfortable --except for the Burlington and Brattleboro portions--natch.

11. I've been voting....
...against him in every election since Governor Dean left to run for President! Maybe I will see him gone in 2010.

8. Here is the veto statement from the Governor
http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/assets/pdf/BT13226146.PDF

Typical lying about what marriage is and what its not.

It should not matter if the federal government recognizes it - the state should/must in order to treat all its citizens equally under the law.

9. there have only been 6 overrides of vetoes in the history
of Vermont. There have been 145 vetoes.

This just makes me heartsick.
