Blanche Lincoln (Sen D-Ark) Against Employee Free Choice Act
Source: Arkansas Business

Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., told a Monday meeting of the Little Rock Political Animals Club that she will oppose the Employee Free Choice Act.

"While I may not have been clear about my position in the past, I am stating today that I cannot support Employee Free Choice Act in its current form and I can’t support efforts to bring it to Senate consideration in its current form," Lincoln said in a statement late Monday afternoon.

"I will consider alternatives that have the support of both business and labor but my pledge today is to focus my full attention on the priorities I have mentioned that affect every working family in Arkansas."

21. She already racked up about $700K when VP Biden came for a fund-raiser for her
just a few weeks ago. She has a healthy start, money-wise, against any would-be challenger, from the left or the right.

16. Dream away. No Democratic Senator has ever been defeated in a primary. The exception proving the
rule is Lieberman. The Senate Democrats ole boys club supported Lieberman over the DEMOCRAT Lamont. The fix is in.

23. Remember, though, that that was back in the day, in Arkansas, when
winning the Democratic primary was tantamount to election, as there was rarely any credible Republican challenger.

Understand that Fulbright (Half-bright as Lyndon Johnson called him when Fulbright turned against the Vietnam War) had been in the Senate since the '40s. Bumpers was a popular two-term governor and was cast as a fresh face.

But still, it's rare.

34. Erm...off the top of my head I can think of
-Senator B Everett Jordan (North Carolina 1972)
-Senator Thomas J Dodd (Connecticut 1970)
-Senator Alan Dixon (Illinois 1992)
-Senator J William Fulbright (Arkansas 1974)
-Senator Mike Gravel (Alaska 1980)
-Senator Ernest Gruening (Alaska 1968)

And I know there are more

It may be rare in this day and age but it has happened in the past. Note I'm not taking a position one way or the other on Lincoln, just pointing out that it does occur

39. CWA Union guy was in that meeting on Monday - he said her whole deal
about the bill is that she "is concerned about small businesses" - union leaders said that issue could be address in the bill, doesn't apply to businesses with less than 50 people, give or take. Teamster guy from Dallas came up and kinda pissed her off and she got her back up. CWA will be meeting with her one-on-one next week. I'll let ya'll know what went on in the meeting.

For every good that Blanche does, she takes 2 backwards. Yes, ya'll are correct, she is the delegate for Walmart and Big Agri around here. There is a huge push to get a real Dem to run against her, but the problem is, who? Haven't seen anybody that could take her on, other than the Gov. Huckabuck hasn't a chance in hell these days, but who knows, right?

The only Republican who might have supported it, has come out against it. Without at least one Republican vote, it is short of cloture.

20. There are no serious progressive challengers in the offing to "Miz Blanche"
And the only GOP challengers being mentioned right now are State Sen. Gilbert Baker (who? statewide name recognition where?) and former (interim) U.S. Attorney Tim Griffin (of Karl Rove/U.S. attorney firings fame).

The seat will essentially be hers for the asking.

26. Not a real Democrat.
How dare she do this? Does she represent Wal-Mart or does she represent the people?

I forget; Arkansas is a wholly-owned subsidiary or Wal-Mart. Probably all of their politicians are bought and paid for.

Was it last week she voted to cut inheritance taxes even further? How much money has she gotten from the Waltons? They need to be drawn and quartered.

There isnt much in the way of unions in my neck of the woods so I dont know how all getting them set up works, but I would think doing away with secret ballots is stupid.

32. This bill removes the provision
for the secret ballot if they can get enough people to publicly sign a check card in their place of employment. So yes, it does get rid of the secret ballot in that case.

What the hell is wrong with holding elections?

44. Please educate me
I was under the understanding that there was a public vote, followed by a private vote. IF this is the case, I would think you could vote for a union publicly even if you did not support it, then vote against it in private. This would allow you to avoid retribution.

If this not the way it currently is, why not switch to it? It seems to make sense.
