Rush hour chaos warning as Tamils hold London bridge
Source: Daily Telegraph

As many as 5,000 demonstrators gathered in streets around the Houses of Parliament on Monday to protest over the Sri Lankan government's offensive against Tamil Tiger rebels and alleged human rights abuses.

On Tuesday, Westminster Bridge and a number of surrounding roads remained closed to traffic as the protest continued as around 900 protesters continued to block the area.

One man was rescued after jumping into the River Thames. He was taken to hospital and his condition is not believed to be serious, police said. Four RNLI lifeboats were on standby in the river amid concerns other demonstrators would attempt to throw themselves off the bridge

Vijay Mahalingam, 28, of Harrow, said: "We are here to call on the British government and other governments of the world to wake up to the problems in our homeland Sri Lanka. "Last week, the most powerful men in the world were here in London but there was no mention of the struggle lots of our people have to face on a daily basis.

By the looks of the article it's Westminster Bridge where the protest is, not London bridge as the torygraph put in the headline.

2. I suspect the writers meant it in the sense that A london bridge was being shut down.

3. It's a UK paper
Telegraph readers may be many things, but they do know the difference between Westminster bridge and London bridge. If the headline is wrong on this point I'm afraid I can't see much excuse for it.

Plus Westminster bridge is right by Parliament so it would be the natural choice for protesters anyway.

5. yes, I'm aware of all that
And assuming I don't know London is rather silly. As it happens my mother lives there. I've spent more time there than in any other city.

6. That would be London Bridge; Westminster Bridge is a London bridge

Note the capitalisation (pun not intended, but I'll leave it there now). I think the Torygraph got it right.

8. i just can't believe ...
i just can't believe that the folks are protesting action against LTTE. It's OK to protest against the suffering of the innocent civilians caught in the middle, but how can one justify protesting action against a group termed as TERRORISTS by nearly every government & the UN.

LTTE have hampered Sri Lankan Tamil rights and Lankan Tamils cannot think of peace in their homeland without eliminating the terrorists. Remember, LTTE top leaders are still wanted in India for the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.
