U.S. indicts Cuban exile militant Luis Posada Carriles, links him to tourist bombings
Edited on Wed Apr-08-09 11:21 PM by Scurrilous
Source: Miami Herald

<snip>

"A federal grand jury handed up a new indictment against Luis Posada Carriles, for the first time linking the Cuban exile militant in a U.S. legal proceeding to a series of 1997 tourist-site bombings in Cuba that killed an Italian national.

The superseding indictment from the grand jury in El Paso does not charge Posada, 81, with planting the bombs or plotting the bombings but with lying in an immigration court about his role in the attacks at hotels, bars and restaurants in the Havana area. The perjury counts were added to the previous indictment that accused Posada of lying in his citizenship application about how he got into the United States. Another new charge is obstruction of a U.S. investigation into "international terrorism."

The indictment marks the first time since Posada arrived in the United States seeking asylum in March 2005 that the government has said he was involved in the Cuba bombings. A federal grand jury in New Jersey had been investigating Posada's alleged involvement in raising money for the bombing campaign among Cuban exiles in Union City, but no charges have been handed up there.

The new charges almost certainly will dismay Posada's supporters in the Cuban exile community who view the exile militant as a hero in the continuing struggle against the Cuban regime.

Posada could not be reached for comment, but his Miami attorney, Arturo V. Hernandez, said his client is innocent."

20. Now we know why the CANF is sucking up to the new agenda..
.. after all, it was CANF funding that sent Posada on the missions to bomb a Cuban airliner (for which he has not been charged in the US yet) and bombing Cuban hotels.

4. If ever there were terrorists
They would have to have a miami connection. I grew up in this great city only to watch these bastard sons of bowery whores become heroes. posada and bosch are terrorist in the first degree. Bombings during the 70's had me in a panic as a child. The terrorists took over this city all in the name of Cuban Freedom. Half my family is now hispanic and I love them very much. These cowards never had the balls to stand up and fight. with only 90 miles separating the US from the Island of Cuba these cowards shoot down airplanes and blow up people rather than face their enemies. I hope that there is justice for the victims of these heinous acts.

16. Oh come on, these "businessmen" would never resort to assassination:
On 19th February, 1986, Barry Seal returned to his Salvation Army hostel at 6.00 p.m. As he parked his white Cadillac he was approached by a man carrying a machine-gun. Two quick bursts hit Seal's head and body. One of Seal's friends, Russ Eakin, observed the killing. "I saw Barry get killed from the window of the Belmont hotel coffee shop. The killers were both out of the car, one on either side, but I only saw one shoot, cause Barry saw it coming and just put his head down on the steering column."

21. Certainly, if perceived as a threat, they would off both these guys BUT
they appear to have been useful pawns in the past. That's the only reason they were kept alive. If they know too much and appear to be on the verge of spilling their guts, one of two events occur:
1. They are quickly eliminated 2. The smear campaign begins to make them look like idiots.

9. There's very interesting history behind him and Orlando Bosch
Bosch and Carriles are both accused of planning the Cubana Flight 455 bombing with the assistance of Pinochet's government (who at the time was US backed).

Bush Sr. was director of the CIA during the Cubana Flight 455 bombing in which 73 people were killed. Documents released in 2005 prove the CIA knew about the plot to bomb flight 455 BEFORE it ever happened.

Years later when Bush Sr is president, Orlando Bosch is in Venezuala facing criminal charges for the flight 455 bombing. Bush Sr's Venezuala ambassador, Otto Reich, got Bosch released and moved to the US. Soon after arriving in Florida, Bosch was arrested for a parole violation (from a previous terrorist attack he was convicted for in 1968) and was awaiting deportation. The Bush Sr Presidential administration intervened to prevent Orlando Bosch from being deported and had him released from jail. This all happened AFTER Bush's own AG called Bosch an "unrepentant terrorist". Bosch walks the streets of Miami a free man to this very day.

So why did Bush go to so much trouble to protect a terrorist who planned the murder of women and children? A plan who Bush himself almost certainly had first hand prior knowledge regarding?

The time for congressional hearings on this matter are long overdue. Bush needs to answer for what he did. Those 73 completely innocent people deserve justice.

19. Amyrose, I got that link back in 2000, when someone posted it at CNN's old message board.
They also mentioned at that board, the fact that the Miami City commissioners actually named a day of the year for this slime: "Orlando Bosch Day." Someone has said they also named a street after him.

He tried to get permission to move to 30 different countries, and they ALL rejected him. He was running out of options. It's really a shame George H. W. Bush made this horrid decision to void a conscientious A.G.'s judgement on Orlando Bosch.

40. To tell you the truth, I at least partially blame the Democratic Party leadership
There should have been congressional hearings in 1987 when Bosch was released from jail and allowed to stay in the US. If not then, there should have been hearings in 2005 when the CIA documents were declassified.

I'd like to know how much the government of Venezuala was paid to release Bosch. I'd like to know just exactly how involved Bush was and how much he knew and when he knew it. I'm quite sure Kissinger, Bush, and many other Republican officials know everything. All anyone has to do is ask them under oath and see if their stories match up.

Look at how much mileage the Republicans got out of Clinton's actions on Marc Rich and the FALN gang. None of those people so much as injured anyone. But Bush takes action to smuggle a known terrorist out of Venezuala who killed 73 people including women and children (as well as many other terrorist acts) and allows him to walk the streets of the US a free man for decades and the Democrats can barely manage a blip on the media's radar?

26. Bush said that his War on Terror would pursue terrorists "in any dark corner of the world,
2005 NYT Editorial

When he was let out of prison the following year, Bosch returned to Miami, where he was detained because of a 1974 parole violation related to his conviction for firing a bazooka in 1968 at a Polish freighter docked in Miami. Greeted in Miami as a hero, Bosch's cause was championed in 1989 by Republican Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, on her way to becoming the first Cuban-American in Congress, and Jeb Bush, the president's son who was Ros-Lehtinen's campaign manager. In 1990, President Bush Sr. freed Bosch from detention despite the fact that the Justice Department had ordered that Bosch be “excluded and deported” from the United States.

In his deportation order, Associate Attorney General Joe D. Whitley wrote, “For 30 years Bosch has been resolute and unwavering in his advocacy of terrorist violence. He has threatened and undertaken violent terrorist acts against numerous targets, including nations friendly toward the United States and their highest officials. He has repeatedly expressed and demonstrated a willingness to cause indiscriminate injury and death. His actions have been those of a terrorist, unfettered by laws or human decency, threatening and inflicting violence without regard to the identity of his victims.”

http://andromeda.rutgers.edu/~hbf/TerroristNetwork.html

Also in 2002, Democratic Senator Christopher Dodd said that when Reich was ambassador, he helped accused exiled Cuban terrorist Orlando Bosch flee the United States. Bosch had been imprisoned in Venezuela for a bombing that blew up a Cubana Airlines flight in Barbados in 1976. In February 1987, Bosch was released from prison, and illegally entered the United States, thanks to a visa supplied to him by Reich. He was quickly detained in the US for having violated his parole. In response, the FNCA, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, and Jeb Bush organized an intense campaign to free him.

Besides Bosch, the anti-Castro Luis Posada Carriles also participated in the bombing. According to Colombian journalist Hernando Calvo Ospino, Posada Carriles had worked for the CIA in Venezuela since 1967 as "an aid to security agencies charged with repressing leftist organizations." Calvo Ospino adds that the court case against the bombing perpetrators "was derailed due to a succession of defense appeals."

28. The "Cuban Five" are in US jail for defending their country against US based terrorism..
Edited on Thu Apr-09-09 10:16 AM by Mika
.. because the US government wasn't going to stop the RW radical exile's terror activities (which are egregious violations of the US's Neutrality Act).

The Cuban Five did not spy on the US government. They were in no way involved in anti US activities - only keeping an eye out on, and had infiltrated, some of these private radical exile groups in Miami, and sending warnings back home when anti Cuba terror ops were in the works by these radical exile groups.

For doing so they were convicted in a kangaroo S Florida court and sentenced to 25 years in maximum security US Super Max prisons, 23 hours a day solitary confinement, and their families are denied US travel visas to visit them (a violation of the Geneva convention).

Big Five Club in Miami supports Luis Posada Carriles legal defense fundraiser

Published: Sun May 04, 2008

Alfonso Chardy | Cuban Colada Blog

One reason several traditional Cuban exile groups organized a tribute dinner to Luis Posada Carriles, the Cuban exile militant, emerged during the Friday night event when one of his closest supporters rose to introduce the guest of honor.

Nelly Rojas, a longtime Posada friend, told the packed banquet hall at the Big Five Club in west Miami-Dade, that supporters will soon be asked to contribute money for the Cuban militant’s legal defense fund.

Rojas said the Luis Posada Carriles Support Group was being “reactivated’’ and that soon it will stage a series of events aimed at raising funds to pay for Posada’s legal expenses.

Rojas said money was needed to cover anticipated “considerable’’ expenses associated with Posada’s pending criminal case stemming from an indictment in El Paso, Texas. The indictment accused him of lying to immigration officials about how he sneaked into the United States in March 2005.

U.S. indicts Cuban exile Luis Posada, links him to bombings, Miami Herald, April 9, 2009

At last.

LAT: A Terrorist Walks (Luis Posada Carriles), April 23, 2007

Don't forget Bush Family buddies Orlando Bosch and Luis Posada Carriles., October 4, 2008

Bush-appointed judge drops charges against Posada, May 8, 2007

May 24, 2007 From Prensa Latina:

.....The United States is faced with Venezuela"s extradition request for Posada Carriles, who escaped from a Caracas prison, where he was doing time for organizing and greenlighting the sabotage of a Cuban civilian airplane in 1976, killing all 73 people on board, in addition to being a repressor in that South American country.

.....

The Nicaraguan government and Salvadorian organizations have presented evidence of Posada Carriles" participation in the Iran-Contras operation to arm Central American counterrevolutionaries, and a Panamanian court sentenced him for plotting to assassinate Cuban President Fidel Castro.
On many occasions, Posada Carriles entered US territory illegally as part of his violent operations, as US prosecutors admitted.

However, all those crimes seemed to vanish when the defendant threatened to reveal the secrets he keeps from the time he was a CIA operative.

..... Link

There's no question as to why Posada Carriles walks free.

Covering Code Pink in Little Havana (Part 3)

There are three television news reports about the last Code Pink demonstration available for review. One from CBS4 news (English) and two Spanish-language reports by Telemundo51 and Noticias23 (Univision). I will use the same methodology used to examine the printed reports: 1) Mention of the Code Pink mission; 2) accurate description of actions directed at Code Pink in Little Havana; and 3) mention of the background and debate over Luis Posada Carriles.

CBS4

The CBS4 report (by Cristina Puig) offers a very good summary of events that occurred that day (Jan. 12th). Puig says that Code Pink had the "proper permits" to demonstrate, "but were quickly chased away" when they arrived at the Versailles Restaurant, where they "didn't stand a chance" against "some 300 angry counter-protesters."

Puig mentioned that Code Pink "wants the FBI to add Posada to their list of 'Most Wanted'" and that they had other demonstrations planned, such as the one last week at the office of Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. The description of events was captured on video with some counter-protesters charging at the Code Pink truck and one individual ripping some fabric from their display. Puig also reports on the controversial background of Luis Posada Carriles by mentioning his immigration case, his being "sought after by Cuba and Venezuela for allegedly downing a Cuban jetliner in 1976, killing 73 passengers," and mentioning that he is an "ex-CIA agent."

Puig's report also includes good quotes by Code Pink members describing their main grievance with the inconsistency of the US on terrorism. Medea Benjamin is quoted saying: "the US government is harboring a terrorist and George Bush has said any country that harbors a terrorist is guilty of terrorism." Puig also includes a quote by Code Pink member Tighe Barry making a complaint directly to a Miami police officer:

"They do not have permits to carry ten foot polls and with points on the end. That I know is a fact. Now why you don't, you do not follow the rule of law. When the rule of law breaks down, Democracy breaks down. When Democracy breaks down, Anarchy takes place. And what we saw in the streets of Miami was Anarchy."

Video from different sources shows several counter-protesters carrying large Cuban flags, with the flagpole made of unknown material and of unknown length. Before the Miami FTAA protests of 2003, the City of Miami made several strict changes to the City Charter in order to regulate materials used for public demonstrations. One regulation was aimed at prohibiting "any length of metal, plastic or other similar hard of stiff material, whether hollow or solid." These regulations had several conditions for these materials, especially one stating that they "be blunt, and not pointed." But, these strict revisions to the City Charter were eventually repealed the following year after protests from several local activists (mostly citing restrictions to number of persons allowed to assemble). But, other cities today regulate certain materials, such as those used for flagpoles, for public demonstration. A Public Assembly application from Concord, North Carolina, for example, regulates wood or plastic poles (including flagpoles) used in demonstrations demanding they be "blunt at both ends" and "less than 41 inches in length."

NOTICIAS23 (UNIVISION)

The reports by the local Spanish -language Univision and Telemundo networks both have glaring omissions in their reporting. Both do not meet the basic journalistic tasks that have set to review. Looking at these Spanish-language television reports, in comparison to the CBS4 report (and the print articles), reveals some interesting biases.

The Noticias23 report begins with video of the Code Pink truck arriving at the Versailles Restaurant, and counter-demonstrators charging at the truck and one individual ripping fabric from the Code Pink display. The reporter does not say that Code Pink was "chased away" like Puig from CBS4, or anything similar to being chased away, but instead simply reports that the police had to "intervene" in the protest (no other mention of aggression is mentioned). Even though there is video of counter-protesters walking into other streets nearby the Versailles Restaurant looking for the pursued Code Pink truck, the Noticias23 reporter still doesn't mention that Code Pink was chased away by the crowd. Instead, one sound bite includes a counter-protester saying: "The streets of Miami belong to us Cuban patriots!"

The Noticias23 report never mentions the mission of the Code Pink demonstration, and never mentions the controversial history of Luis Posada Carriles. I suppose Univision assumes that its viewers are already aware of the controversy, or decided that it was not important. Instead, the report questions the history of Code Pink. The reporter poses the question to its viewers:

"The real question is: who makes up and what ideas are brought by the group Code Pink?"

The reporter asks, of ALL people, Miguel Saavedra for an answer. Saavedra was caught attacking counter-protesters last January on the streets of Calle Ocho. Saavedra says that Code Pink "represents" the government of Venezuela and Cuba. This is followed by a short interview with Medea Benjamin of Code Pink saying that "we are a group of women for peace, and we're here to say that our government has a 'War on Terror,' and we're looking for terrorist all over the world." Benjamin is then cut off, leaving one with an incomplete picture of their official mission. No mention of gathering signatures for the FBI, no mention the FBI billboards, no mention of Posada's past. Instead, time is given to a counter-protester extolling Posada as a "fighter for Cuba's freedom," and estimates the counter-protest crowd at more than 500, instead of the much reported 200-300.

Interestingly, the Noticias23 report includes a brief interview with Ada Rojas, Community Relations Coordinator for the City of Miami. Rojas is shown trying to control some of the crowd (with little success), along with city police. Rojas is quoted saying: "The Cuban community like always there's lots of emotions." It's not clear what the City of Miami's Community Relations Board(CRB) mission is, but if it's anything like Miami-Dade County's CRB, then they have a lot of work to do, mainly in creating an atmosphere "free from sectarianism and prejudice." According to one report, Ada Rojas was once "in charge of a permitted event at the Miami Arena where approximately 200 people demonstrated peacefully." How lucky for them, but not for Code Pink.

Let Ada Rojas know how you feel about Code Pink's demonstration in Little Havana.

TELEMUNDO51

Anyway, the Telemundo51 report was much better than the Univision report. Despite not showing the video of the Code Pink truck being charged at by some counter-protesters, the reporter (Ana Cuervo) does make it up by including important facts.

Cuervo interviews Medea Benjamin accurately stating the mission of the Code Pink demonstration, which included the handing out and gathering of signatures asking the FBI to detain Luis Posada Carriles to be extradited. The postcards would then be delivered to the FBI by Code Pink. But, Cuervo doesn't mention the controversy behind Posada's militant past, and instead includes an interview with a counter-protester (former political prisoner Miguel Pardo) saying that Posada has been acquitted of his crimes.

Later, Benjamin is quoted saying that Code Pink was "attacked" and denied their "rights of free expression" by counter-protesters at the Versailles Restaurant. But, by not including the video of Code Pink being chased away, Telemundo51 viewers are left guessing about what EXACTLY happened, and perhaps thinking that if it wasn't serious, then Code Pink maybe deserved what they got.

The report begins with Cuervo describing the counter-protest crowd as "more than ready" in confronting Code Pink, but ends saying that Code Pink later went to the police department to make a complaint on the large counter-protest crowd for impeding their planned demonstration. Without knowing EXACTLY what had occurred, co-anchor Ivan Taylor in the end responds saying: "Surely they left with a big surprise."

I would call it more than just a "big surprise."

46. FYI: Vigilia Mambisa
Edited on Fri Apr-10-09 07:47 AM by Mika
Judi, Vigilia Mambisa is the same group that attacked the Miami Bolivarian circle group that held a 2007 rally in support of the Venezuelan constitutional amendment election at that time.

They were also the leaders of the violent anti Los Van Van attacks on fans attending the concert by Cuban band Los Van Van in Miami several years ago.

Some of their membership were the armed "security" for the drunken uncle of Elian during that debacle.

Nasty bunch.

MIAMI (CBS4) ―

Protesters scuffle in Little Havana after opposing protests involving Luis Posada Carilles turned briefly violent
CBS

(1/22/2007)
Opposing sides at a rally supporting anti-Castro militant Luis Posada Carilles as he faces a federal trial and possible deportation clashed violently Friday afternoon in Miami. As cameras captured the scene, the Posada supporters crossed the street and started attacking the Posada opponents.

Approximately 80 people had gathered at the Bay of Pigs Memorial on SW 8th Street in Miami to show their support for Posada about Noon Friday, playing music and showing flags and banners. The protesters urged people driving by to show their support for Posada, a former CIA operative who is suspected of plotting the bombing of a Cuban jetliner 30 years ago.

Posada was indicted in Texas last week on charges of lying when attempting to become a US citizen. He now faces deportation, if the US can find a country which will accept him. So far, no country has been willing to accept Posada, and supporters Friday urged he be allowed to stay.

While the first group demonstrated, a smaller group of about 30 people gathered across the street and started yelling, calling Posada a terrorist. The situation quickly turned to violence, and as television camera captured the scene the Posada demonstrators ran across the street and began attacking the anti-Posada protesters.

Blows were exchanged, and some protesters on both side appeared to have sustained minor injuries. The Posada supporters chased the anti-Posada protesters down the street, tossing rocks and a bullhorn at people as they ran.

When Anti-Posada protesters trued to get into a car and leave, the Posada supporters kicked the car and beat it with their fists, and appeared to be attempting to pull the doors open.

You can hear Saavedra calling the driver a "puta." Nice self-control, Mr. Saavedra.
