Protesters Jump On Stage During Larry Summers Speech
Source: The Huffington Post

Larry Summers' address before the Economic Club in Washington D.C. on Thursday was interrupted for several minutes as a group of Code Pink protesters jumped on the stage and held up a large sign behind Summers' head that said, "We Want Our $$$ Back!"

The protest came as Summers was addressing a question on whether a second stimulus would be needed, and it stopped the conversation in its tracks.

"Larry Summers is part of the problem," screamed one of the activists. "He is a mess."

In the audience, another demonstrator began to shout out the money and positions that Summers had earned during his time outside of government. "$5.2 million, this man made working one day a week," screamed one.

The crowd, mostly business officials from D.C., offered applause at Summers' hefty earnings.

................that you hate and work 40+ hours a week for maybe 10-12 dollars an hour, if you are fucking lucky. This prick and ALL the others like him haven't "worked" a day in their lives.

67. The whole civility thing doesn't seem to be working these days.
When we're polite and ask nicely for our grievances to be addressed, all we get is a condescending pat on the head, an insincere smile, and zero action.

It takes protests and obnoxiousness to compel people like Summers to behave and start doing something that benefits We, the People.

So, yeah, kudos and thumbs up for some well-delivered obnoxiousness!

Killing - more money for the endless, made-up, BS war on the people who had nothing to do with 9-11.

Stealing - money for the corrupt banksters who collapsed the worlds economy.

Why people accept an economic policy that will be fatal to this nation, simply because it has a "D" after it, makes no sense to me.

It is a giveaway to the Wall Street Wolves, every bit the same as if someone of Bush's buddies designed it. And will not help the middle incomed one bit.

127. Both Ds & Rs leadership beong to the Money Party, the oligarchs.
They (like Summers etc.)do the bidding of the oligarchs when not in power and get paid well then when in power make sure these same oligarchs are protected. They worked in Clinton administration to deregulate wall street and the banking system...then went to work for these oligarchs making tons of profit....then back into go9vetrnment when Obama gets elected to make re their buddies are protected with tax payer money.

I want to trust Obama's judgment too but here he is being held hostage and blackmailed by the finance industry who threaten to collapse our economy if Obama doesn't do what they ask. Even if he nationalizes the banks they have tied up enough funds and have enough influence to make sure we don't get loans easily since these same oligarchs have nationalized.

We need a Huey Long approach. Take the banks and fire wall street, roll back the Reagan tax cuts on capital gains (which is where starving the government of operating funds began) and make sweeping regulation laws. We'd solve our economic crisis and have enough funds for ed, health care, infrastructure repair, and converting over to alternative energy.

But we'd have to battle Chuck Norris (and standing behind him, Hannity, Rush, Bachmann, O'Reilly, Beck etc) and the other greedy "millionaires" who want a Monarchy.

167. August of 06
We drove down from Crawford. Karl was appearing at a fundraiser in a fancy hotel. It was one of those where the lobby was an atrium with 12 floors of rooms and balconies overlooking the lobby. As the rich Republicans arrived for their cocktail hour in the lobby we were there with signs reminding them that war crimes were being committed. We outnumbered them two to one at least. They finally got smart and started sneaking into the banquet hall without going through the lobby. The manager told us we would have to leave since we weren't guests so a bunch of Code Pinkers checked in - which gave us access to the balcony. :)

So someone had a big banner PINK SLIP KARL and it was unfurled from a balcony on about the 8th floor. Then just when we thought the excitement was over, and we were walking out of the lobby, in came the Code Pink police and they were led by Cindy Sheehan. They went to the door of the banquet room and Cindy banged on it, demanding that Karl come out because she had a warrant for his arrest.

Then as soon as the cops came in and made us all leave, there were several Code Pinkers who had gotten into the banquet and they started jumping up one at a time, demanding Karl be arrested.

It was freakin awesome. I think the pictures are on my other computer. I will dig them out and post them one of these days.

Willie Nelson's wife Annie was there too.

Truly one of the best days of my life :)

89. How did acting like 'grownups'
help over the past eight disastrous years? Oh yes, no one listened to us, did they?

If everyone had acted like Code Pink, maybe someone would have listened, instead we were constantly told, no matter how egregious the behavior of our elected officials, and that includes the Dems (remember the 12 Dem Senators who voted for the Military Commissions Act eg?) who enabled Bush and his criminal administration, to 'be patient' , to 'behave nicely' etc. And not a single life was saved, or a single act of torture stopped.

The government does not want to hear from the people, Code Pink and others have the right idea. We should be ashamed at how 'patient' and 'pragmatic' we were for so long as people died and lost their rights, and this country became a pariah in the eyes of the world.

Code Pink was after Bush and his Cabal constantly during their reign or terror.

As for the disaster you speak of, it's something that's been brewing for decades, and it is not exclusive to the Bush Cabal. Try going back through history a bit

But I wouldn't expect you to know that.

But it ain't gonna happen w/Obama's choice of scoundrels he has surrounded himself with.

47. Yep, put the insolvent banks into receivership
Thus making all the nasty contracts the financial institutions hold void.

Set up a Central bank with the monies that need to go to the Public going to the Public. Rather than a 2.9 to 20.? Trillion dollar giveaway to Wall Street, the Central Bank should be handed the money and then lends the money directly to those Americans who need it.

Or alternately, send the money to the regional banks that took over when the S & L debacle occurred. Have those banks stand as banks for the People. This is what brought about recovery after that S & L failure.

In fact, the people that were in charge of that process are still around and could be the overseers of this this second time around.

when they present their anti-war message to mothers around the world. Keep an eye on the White House May 9th.

I think if you asked them why they are protesting at gatherings they would be fully capable of giving good reason. You're wrong in thinking THEY don't know why they're there; YOU are the one that doesn't know. Just listen. You can usually hear why they're protesting if they aren't carted off first and anyway, it's usually blatantly obvious.

These people fail to realize that without progress, there is no perfection.

An UNCONTESTED wikipedia page says Code Pink describes themselves as a "grassroots peace and social justice movement working to end the war in Iraq, stop new wars, and redirect our resources into healthcare, education and other life-affirming activities."

With Obama we may not have peace, but we have a time limit, a drastic cut in a bloated military budget, anti-torture legislation, and a long-lost international diplomacy.

and it's FUCKING MIND-BLOWING to me that they claim support to "redirect our resources into healthcare, education and other life-affirming activities" while they bash the stimulus bill. Obama has billions going to education, infrastructure, environmental standards, green industries, other "life-affirming activities", and is the first president in our history to legitimately attempt a Universal Healthcare system. OBAMA'S TAKEN MASSIVE STRIDES IN PROGRESS COMPARED TO ANY PRESIDENT (DEMOCRAT OR REPUBLICAN) AND "CODE PINK" IS BITCHING ABOUT AN ADMINISTRATION THATS ACTUALLY ADDING TO THE BUILDING BLOCKS THAT WILL LEAD TO THEIR VISION; FUCK-THEM.

I could see "Code Pink" in the 1930's, "FDR give us our money back!", "The New Deal is a RAW Deal", "3.3 million jobs created, SO WHAT?!", "Unemployment down every year, SO WHAT?!" News flash; FDR was involved in banking and big business too.

In less than eighty days, some here expect perfection from Obama, and are now happy that a group is trying to bring him down.

The only thing that could come of something like this is less support of the president's agenda; like universal healthcare, fixing the climate, and getting re-elected.

114. WRONG!!!!!
Obama is DEAD WRONG on so many things. First, the bailout of the banks...dead wrong. He has done exactly what Bush did by putting foxes in charge of the hen house. Larry Summers, Tim Geithner...all VERY bad choices. They are not just part of the problem, they ARE the problem. His justice department asserts the state secrets privilege, then goes further than Bush and asserts complete sovereign immunity. Contrary to your assertion, Obama continues the huge increases in military spending (we are still NUMBER ONE in military spending in the world). There are some things I like about Obama, but letting the banks STEAL $1,000,000,000,000 for their welfare is not change we can believe in. Real change would be toppling the entire financial system; working HARD to bring back Glass-Steagall by working hard to repeal Gramm-Leech-Bliley (which Clinton signed). Painful as it would be, this system is not fixable. It must be torn down and rebuilt. The notion that 12 private banks own and control our money supply is appalling.

Let me point out some of your other falsehoods: there is NO anti-torture legislation. In fact, we are continuing extraordinary renditions (though they said they closed the black sites). See what I said above about state secrets and sovereign immunity (http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2009/04/06/obama/). As far as Iraq, while he's an improvement, he's still going to keep 50,000 troops there. He has proposed no cuts in defense spending (again see above). So...while I may or may not agree with Code Pink. Get your facts right.

116. Stimulus is money spent well
most can see that. If we had spent the TARP money and AIG money on additional stimulus or on universal health care, wouldn't that have been something?

The bailouts to banks and financial institutions using taxpayer money? Most don't think that's a good idea. It's a shame really that we spend more time fighting amongst ourselves over that. Because I've never seen an issue that so many of every party agree in opposing.

106. Dumb...
...but that never stopped a determined liberal. The right wing loves shit like this. They can go on msm, who's audience we, DUers that is, make up a very, very small percentage and say "Look, even liberal democrats think democrats stink, and we tried to warn you this would happen!" The general public absorbs this shit like a sponge, and the msm being republican compliant do their part to make it believable. Until the left finally understands that there are times when ideology should give way to the greater good, that retaining power, even if imperfect, is the only way this country will survive. Give those goddamn republican bastards one more shot, and we'll be done for good. I just don't understand why some on the left cannot grasp the reality of the world we live in. Think we can bring about Shangri-la with one fucking election? Wake up, reality is knocking, make that banging on the front door. If we ever learn how not to shoot ourselves in the foot, perhaps one day, a President Kucinich will be a reality, and not a side-show. Thanks.

Obama will take notice. He has turned out to be the biggest DLCer of the whole DC bunch. If he had only been honest during the campaign, I wouldn't feel so cheated. When he voted with the telecons, he had already sealed the Democratic nomination. That action clearly demonstrated the handwriting on the wall, but it was too late.

Lots of people are angry about Summers. Code Pink just made all that look like a kook fringe cause. Code Pink would rather the attention go to themselves than have it focused on the problems.

161. Perhaps you'd support a strongly worded letter? Not too strongly worded, mind you,
but perhaps semi-sternly worded, or come to think of it, just worded, or maybe this would be the time to keep our powder dry and our table clear so as to conserve our energies for future actions that may require as energetic a solution as a strongly (or semi-strongly) worded letter, so long as it ends with the boilerplate, "Hope we're not hurting anybody's feelings."

So perhaps no letter at all right now, but the thought of a letter, so long as we don't mention it to anyone, would suit you?

171. How about letters to editors?
How about looking for like minded people and lobbying for changes? How about holding demonstrations that don't create disturbances.

Those things are good enough for everybody else. Why should Code Pink get special mike privileges?

The Code Pink followers ridicule people who post on the net. But the people who post on the net played a big role in electing Obama and putting the GOP out of power. Meanwhile, Code Pink accomplished the big goose egg.

Your tone does not describe anything about me. You created a false dichotomy.

179. Nope, not at all. You disdain any sort of disturbance. Words have been
known to cause great disturbance.

"government of the people, by the people, for the people"

"I regret that I have but one life to give for my country"

"Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty."

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."

Your claim is that a disturbance serves no purpose but self-aggrandizement to the disturber. Therefore, any action which causes disturbance must be avoided. Words have often disturbed others, so words must be chosen that cause no disturbance. To be on the safe side, words could be eschewed and thoughts substituted with no danger of creating a disturbance. There is no false dichotomy. Change cannot occur without disturbance. You are anti-disturbance, therefore anti-change. That is your right.

But those who desire change must make a disturbance.

The Declaration of Independence does not say "look, if you don't mind terribly, we'd like to form our own country. Now, we're not going to create any sort of disturbance to get it, but if you'd grant that, thank you."

Edited on Sat Apr-11-09 01:17 AM by kas125
I helped start a local chapter, I went to the RNC with them, I meet with my reps regularly to tell them what I expect them to do (not that they always do, but I tell them.), I attend weekly vigils at two different places, I work with IVAW, I do counter recruiting and "help" local high schools learn what the law says about recruiters in schools and opt-out forms for the students, I went into the belly of the beast and protested at a Palin rally, I worked my ass off for Obama and so did all the rest of CP, simply because we hoped that he'd listen to the PEOPLE more than the other choices would have. I attended a two day DNC women's conference and got to see the Obamas, the Bidens, and almost everyone who is now part of the White House. I may go on CodePink's next Gaza trip. I do a lot of different things, as do all CP'ers.

My question was what it is that YOU do that is more effective than we do. If you think that posting here, complaining about what we do on an internet message board has any effect whatsoever, then I simply don't agree.

Thank you for doing them. You accomplish far more than I do. You can do all those things without creating disturbances though.

I'm not saying posting on the net is better than all forms of political activity. I'm defending the people who work on the net from those here who dismiss net activity as doing nothing. The net accomplished a great deal. Code Pink's disturbances have not.

182. But what people don't seem to understand is that the
"disturbance" thing is probably about two percent of what CodePink actually does.

And I sure don't see anybody else out there, in public, talking about or protesting giving the banks OUR money to buy their own toxic assets.

I'm not sure what works, all I know is that I do every single thing I can think of from posting on the inernet to going to DC to meet with my reps and everything in between, and nothing has changed the war, the deaths, the wasting of our money... but I am compelled to keep trying, every way I can think of, because I refuse to let the blood of the people in Afghanistan and Iraq be on my hands.

142. Saw it Live on C-SPAN
A largely meaningless stunt.

Summers is the Director of the National Economic Council, an advisory role, and isn't in any position to direct funds towards institutions he may have received money from in the past. That's mostly been accomplished through the Federal Reserve, with $250 billion having been doled out by the Treasury under Paulson. He certainly has the ability to influence the decisions of people actually in charge of government agencies, but the proverbial buck doesn't stop with him.

The questions were rather bland, to be honest, and reflected an observational bias on the part of David Rubenstein (the interviewer) that Summers often had to caution against. "Well we all know deflation isn't the problem anymore, but is inflation as big a concern as some have argued?" Good Lord. I'm not expecting anyone from the Economic Club to ask Summers to elaborate on the observable differences between a liquidity crisis and an insolvency crisis, or anything like that, but that's the sort of bullshit question I'd expect from cable news polemicist.
