Goochland residents have highest average income in U.S.
Source: Richmond Times-Dispatch

Goochland County residents had the highest average income of any county in the United States, a study using the latest available tax data has found.

For the 2007 filing year, the average adjusted gross income in the rural county was $137,045, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University.

That is more than 13 times the average in St. Bernard Parish, La., which had the lowest average at $9,959.

The survey looked at the more than 3,100 counties in the United States. Goochland edged out Teton County, Wyo. -- the home of the Jackson Hole ski resort has an average of $126,998.

The next three wealthiest localities, according to average adjusted gross income, were Fairfield County, Conn., at $117,425; Falls Church city in Virginia at $116,151; and Marin County, Calif., at $116,094. Falls Church is categorized as a "county equivalent" by the U.S. Census Bureau.

1. ridiculous comparisons, really. Gooschland County pop is approx. 17,000
Fairfield County pop is approx 900,000. A better comparison might be, Gooschland County and the town of New Canaan, CT, located in Fairfield County and close to the same size of Gooschland County with a pop. of approx 19,000. The median income there is 171,000.

5. Let's also not forget that a lot of addresses officially aren't even in this country
or at least the money doesn't pass through a US residence

I was expecting Westchester County upstate NY or Wyoming where Oprah/Ted Turner live but then they may not pay taxes from those addresses

7. what's ridiculous about it?
they compared all the counties and found which had the highest average income. you are saying something about comparing counties to cities and average income to median income. and what population has to do with any of it is beyond me. bottom line is goochland has a high concentration of wealth.

2. Old richmond money.
And a lot of new Richmond money. Phillip Morris, Owens Minor, Genworth, Capital One, and Car-max.

3. Aside from very mild curiousity about the origin of the name "Goochland," I can't say I care.
