Palin names three candidates for Senate seat (Updated)

From Sean Cockerham in Juneau –

Gov. Sarah Palin surprised state lawmakers tonight by forwarding the names of three appointees to the single open state Senate seat. Two of them, Tim Grussendorf and Joe Nelson, have already been rejected by the Senate Democrats.

Palin said the third, Alan Wilson, is a “successful small businessman and active in the community." He is involved with the Affordable Housing Commission and serves as co-chair of the Cold Climate Housing Research Center. He is a former president of the Alaska State Home Building Association and is currently president of Alaska Renovators, a remodeling company. Palin said that the Senate Democrats can now choose from among the three.

Anchorage Democratic Sen. Bill Wielechowski objected that, under the law, Palin can’t appoint three people to the seat -- she has to pick one of them. He also objected to all three of the names she put forward. “From my perspective, I’m not going to support any of those names,” Wielechowski said.

He said he has no idea who Wilson is. But he that he checked when his name started floating around and found that, at least until recently, Wilson was not registered as a Democrat. He was registered as undeclared, Wielechowski said. (Update -- Palin spokeswoman Sharon Leighow said Wilson became a Democrat on March 4.)

1. She is as thick as a plank.
On a side note; I wonder if she knows yet "just what the heck a vice president does".

2. This has nothing to do with being thick...

This is pure vengeance and spite. This has been an ongoing story, and what she's doing here is sticking her finger in the eyes of all the Juneau Democrats...and actually the entire legislature. It's a great big 'FUCK YOU.' This may finally be the point at which the legislature wakes up and realizes that she needs to be removed from power.

6. It comes as no surprise as she began her Administration doing the same thing
The Only Governor ever to hold their inaugeration in another city than the Capital. She spends the least amount of time in the Capital city of any previous Governor and then on top of that charges the state per diem for not staying in the Capital but in her own home.

7. Shouldn't he at least find out who he is before declaring his nonsupport?
It sounds ludicrous to make a statement like "I have no idea who Wilson is, but I'm not going support him."

8. Wilson declared his Democratic party affiliation

the day AFTER Kim Elton left for his job with the Obama administration, at least according to Palin's spokesperson. This is just another attempt by Palin to install one of her own as senator for Juneau, a notoriously liberal area of the state. (Somewhere I was reading last night that this person actually contributed to Sarah's 2006 campaign for governor.) His sole qualification seems to be that he is the husband of one of the owners of the shoe store where Sarah bought her "Naughty Monkey" pumps that she (or allegedly her niece) later sold on eBay for over $2,000.

Dems won't vote on three names for Senate seat
Posted by Alaska_Politics

State Senate Democrats are refusing to vote on the three names that Gov. Sarah Palin forwarded as appointees for the open Senate seat. They obtained a legal opinion this morning saying it is illegal for Palin to submit more than one name.

“There is nothing for us to vote on, there is no appointment,” said Senate Judiciary Chairman Hollis French, an Anchorage Democrat. “The governor has taken an unusual course which is outside the law and leaves us no choice but to ignore what she‘s done.”

The governor’s attorney general appointee, Wayne Anthony Ross, said in response that he needs to review the legal opinion by Pam Finley, revisor of statutes, But Ross said he believes what Palin did was legal and appropriate.

Palin surprised lawmakers Tuesday night by forwarding the names of three appointees to the single open state Senate seat. Two of them,
Tim Grussendorf and Joe Nelson, have already been rejected by the Senate Democrats. The third, Alan Wilson, is a Juneau contractor who became a Democrat on March 4, and was previously registered nonpartisan.

Palin must appoint a Democrat from Juneau to the seat, which opened when longtime Juneau Democratic Sen. Kim Elton resigned for an Obama administration job.

Her pick requires approval of a majority of the nine state Senate Democrats.

The legislature will be voting tomorrow whether or not to accept the appointment of WAR. My guess is Sarah didn't want a real Democrat voting on this appointment, which is why she's stalled to this degree. Plus, she just hates Juneau which is why she's been "governing" from her home in Wasilla and collecting per diem. I believe we have enough to start impeachment or recall proceedings against her. More and more people are calling for it, and "Impeach Palin" signs are popping up around town.

9. You know more about him than Wielechowski
Which is my point--how hard is it to educate oneself before making a public statement?

10. At this point, I think it's a case of "Pavlov's dog"
Palin has been burning the Democrats in the legislature so consistently, that they just KNOW she's up to no good -- and, of course, they're right.

11. Palin's AG pick: Dems should "not argue if Palin's actions are illegal or legal"
Edited on Wed Apr-15-09 06:01 PM by rainbow4321

I caught up with the governor’s attorney general appointee, Wayne Anthony Ross, in the Capitol. Ross said he needs to review the legal opinion by Pam Finley, a lawyer for the Legislature. But he said he believes what Palin did was legal and appropriate, given the time he's had to look at it to this point.

"It seems to me the most important thing that can be done by the Senate is not argue with legal or illegal but to appoint somebody to represent Juneau," said Ross, whose own appointment is up for a confirmation vote by the Legislature tomorrow.

Ross said the dispute could impact the vote on his confirmation.

"I get involved in this kind of donnybrook I probably won't get any votes from the people that disagree with me. I may be through tomorrow afternoon, who knows. But I'm hoping I'll get a chance to be confirmed," Ross said.
