Blagojevich seeks permission to participate in reality show in Costa Rica
Last Updated: Wednesday, April 15, 2009 | 11:59 AM ET

Former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich will ask a U.S. court for permission to leave the United States to participate in a reality TV series in Costa Rica.

Blagojevich is slated to appear in NBC's I'm a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here, premiering on June 1, NBC confirmed late Tuesday.

Blagojevich "will be a participant on the show pending the court's approval," the statement said.

Blagojevich, 52, pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to federal corruption charges. He is accused of scheming to auction off U.S. President Barack Obama's former senate seat, attempting to extort campaign money from companies seeking state business and plotting to use the financial muscle of the governor's office to pressure the Chicago Tribune to fire editorial writers who called for his impeachment.

2. NO FUCKING WAY!
My niece is in Costa Rica. I don't want that asswipe anywhere NEAR her!

Well, and then there's the "escaping the country" problem, but I'm just looking out for my niece.

NBC wants ex-Ill. gov. for Costa Rica reality show

By MIKE ROBINSON
Associated Press Writer

CHICAGO -- In the span of a few months, Rod Blagojevich could trade the Illinois governor's office for the Costa Rican jungle.

NBC says it wants Blagojevich, who pleaded not guilty to federal racketeering and fraud charges Tuesday, to appear on its upcoming show "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!"

A network statement says 10 celebrities will be dropped into the Costa Rican jungle "to face challenges designed to test their skills in adapting to the wilderness."

But Blagojevich's legal problems could end the venture before it begins.

10. Rod Blagojevich banned from starring in 'I'm a Celebrity'
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/5198050/Rod-Blagojevich-banned-from-starring-in-Im-a-Celebrity.html

Mr Blagojevich, 52, has pleaded not guilty to racketeering, fraud and other charges that allege he schemed to sell or trade president Barack Obama's former US Senate seat.

He had hoped to make some money to support his family by heading to Costa Rica in June to be on NBC's "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!" while lawyers in Chicago worked on his case.

But Judge James B. Zagel said his time would be better spent helping his lawyers cope with the mound of documentary evidence prosecutors will soon turn over to the defense.

"I don't think this defendant fully understands and I don't think he could understand ... the position he finds himself in," he said, denying the impeached former governor permission to leave the country.

...Judge James B. Zagel said...

Or maybe he does and this is a stealth insanity defense--like what Katherine Harris has been doing!

But there's always Dancing With The Stars, I suppose...
