Rights group alarmed over Islamic law in Swat
Source: Associated Press

ISLAMABAD (AP) — An international human rights group urged Pakistan to reverse its decision to enforce Islamic law in a northwestern valley in a peace pact with the Taliban, saying the deal threatens women and takes the region back to the "Dark Ages."

Human Rights Watch said the government's move amounted to granting the Taliban "de-facto administrative control of the Swat Valley" and "presents a grave threat to the rights of women and other basic rights in the troubled region."

The Taliban are "taking Swat back to the Dark Ages and the Pakistani government is now complicit in their horrific abuses," Ali Dayan Hasan, a senior South Asia researcher for the New York-based group, said Wednesday.

The Swat Valley is less than 100 miles (160 kilometers) from Islamabad and once attracted hordes of tourists.

In the United States, a woman is beaten every 18 minutes. Indeed, domestic violence is the leading cause of injury among women of reproductive age in the United States. Between 22 and 35 per cent of women who visit emergency rooms are there for that reason. In the United States, national statistics indicate that a women is raped every six minutes.

I agree that Taliban destroyed schools,in some areas banned female education and there are many pictures on all websites showing women abuses by Taliban but would you bother to comment on the above mentioned statistics which belong to the one of the biggest liberal nation and also developed country that attacked Afghanistan in name of women rights. In Afghanistan when poverty, hunger, corruption and illiteracy reached to its heights these situations developed but what about US no such conditions prevail there.

Some people consider religion or fundamentalism behind all the abuses but in reality from the time when Russia invaded Afghanistan till now not even a single society has been allowed to develop properly in Afghanistan. These regions are victims of Western injustice.

Human right abuses particularly women abuses are common worldwide if you say that there are thousand HR abuse cases in Afghanistan then the same numbers belong to US as well. Then why these cases are so much enlightened by media but not the other cases.I would also focus in the advanced cities of my own country like Karachi where women abuses are common by people who pose themselves as liberals and social reformers. In many countries like France,India,Thailand,Peru,Canada etc women abuses occur.

Today when the same Taliban (as called by people but they are actually the locals)in Swat valley are allowing girls to attend schools, have banned displaying of weapons in the locality can't be given just a single chance. This peace deal has brought hope to Pakistani people.People in these areas are happy and they want Islamic Sharia to be imposed then what is the problem with west.Islamic Sharia grants basic human rights to men and women.Let it be established properly so that people could get justice.

This peace deal has returned the happiness and beauty of Swat valley but an army operation would definitely send them to dark ages.
