Marshall facility dedicated in honor of Sen. Byrd's wife

HUNTINGTON -- Sen. Robert C. Byrd couldn't help shedding tears at the kind words used to describe his late wife, Erma Ora Byrd, at Thursday's dedication of Marshall University's clinical center in her name.

"I am forever grateful for naming this center after my beloved wife, Erma," the longest-serving senator in U.S. history said. "Your tribute to her on the program, noting her concern for the education and well-being of others was central to her life, was on target. Erma was a compassionate soul, and she devoted her entire life to caring for others. That was my Erma."

Byrd, 91, D-W.Va., arrived just before 11 a.m. outside the main entrance to a cheering crowd of more than 100 Marshall University School of Medicine staff and students, along with members of the community and the Marshall family. As he sat in the back seat of the white Lincoln Navigator, the veil was lifted on the newly placed lettering on the 15th Street side of the facility.

1. I love their amplifiers
And have heard great things about Bird. The combination of Marshall amps and the legendary Bird should be a winner.

3. Egomaniac...
...is more like it.

The entire state is filled with projects with his name on them.

His actions in his younger days made life very hard for black folk in West Virginia. I cannot forgive him for his transgressions. If you forgive him, you have to forgive Strom Thurmond and George Wallace (both made strong cases for redemption late in life) - I do not forgive them either.

5. On some issues....
...you are damn right!

There are plenty of registered and Elected Democrats that are racist assholes (yes...there are A LOT more republicans that fit that category). That trait crosses party lines. Any argument to the contrary is ignorant.

7. A lot of elderly folks were racist in their younger days BUT
that was what they were taught. As they aged they realized they were wrong and some people, such as Senator Byrd, has tried to make a wrong right. I can forgive a person like that but not a person who continues to treat others wrong. Senator Byrd is a great person and I deeply admire the man!
