G20 death was not heart attack
Edited on Fri Apr-17-09 10:17 AM by muriel_volestrangler

A police officer has been interviewed under caution for manslaughter after a new post-mortem overturned the cause of Ian Tomlinson's death.

The newspaper-seller was struck and pushed over by a police officer during G20 protests on 1 April in the City.

Now a fresh examination has found he died of abdominal haemorrhage, not a heart attack, as originally thought.

And, for background:

First Pathologist in Ian Tomlinson G20 death case was reprimanded over conduct

The initial post mortem examination of the man who died at the G20 protests after being attacked by a police officer, which found he had died of a heart attack, was conducted by a forensic pathologist once reprimanded about his professional conduct by the General Medical Council.

Ian Tomlinson, a 47-year-old newspaper seller, died on April 1 after being assaulted at least once by officers policing the G20 demonstrations. He had been trying to walk home from work when he was confronted by police, hit with a baton and thrown to the ground.

Two days later Home Office pathologist Dr Freddy Patel concluded Tomlinson had died of a heart attack. He has previously been reprimanded by the GMC, after he released medical details about a man who died controversially in police custody.
...
A source with detailed knowledge of the IPCC investigation expressed surprise that the initial post mortem was referred to Dr Patel rather than the Forensic Pathology Services, a body of nine independent forensic pathologists, including Dr Cary, which usually deals with suspicious deaths in London and the home counties.

1. Tomlinson officer questioned on suspicion of manslaughter
Source: Guardian (UK)

New postmortem contradicts heart attack initially cited by police as Tomlinson's cause of death ...

The new postmortem showed that Tomlinson died from an abdominal haemorrhage. The cause of Tomlinson's injury has not been established, but investigators will now have to decide whether alleged police assaults on the 47-year-old contributed to his death...

...whether alleged police assaults on the 47-year-old contributed to his death...

So like, he may just spontaneously have developed intra-abdominal hemorrhage when he just happened to being batoned by the cops?

Why, on earth, was this not found on the original autopsy - done by one of Her Majesty's police coroners perhaps?

2. Compare.......... Just over the last 20yrs the allegations of..........................
.........police brutality here in the US, but it's increasing all over the world in the so-called democracies. At the time when the conservatives started up the tough on crime policy (that also meant being extra tough on minorities) I was in some sense thinking, Yeah, OK maybe that might be a good idea. But in the last 10yrs or so, I have become a great believer in no matter who's in power, too much power leads to excessive bad policies against a country's own citizens.

3. original pathologist was a police stooge

He found the bleeding and various injuries but concluded cause of death was Heart failure...

"The initial post mortem examination of the man who died at the G20 protests after being attacked by a police officer, which found he had died of a heart attack, was conducted by a forensic pathologist once reprimanded about his professional conduct by the General Medical Council.

... Home Office pathologist Dr Freddy Patel concluded Tomlinson had died of a heart attack. He has previously been reprimanded by the GMC, after he released medical details about a man who died controversially in police custody.

In a second case, which raised questions about Dr Patel's findings, police dropped a criminal investigation after the pathologist gave it as his opinion that the victim, a woman, had died of natural causes. A man who lived in the flat where the body was found went on to murder two other women and mutilate their bodies."

4. Beautiful - watching government in action.

"... City of London said they did not have the necessary information to comment on Dr Patel's involvement in Tomlinson's post mortem...'as we wish to maintain the integrity of the investigation'."

With a straight face this was said?

5. I saw the video of the man being knocked down...
...and while it was an obvious assault which should be prosecuted, it did not look at all like anything that would come near to being fatal. It simply looked like a guy getting shoved after which, he fell over. Perhaps what I could not see in the video might have been a baton or something that was used to jab the man in a concentrated spot on his back causing the internal bleeding rather than a simple shove.

Did the more legit autopsy confirm that?

7. ahhhh...interesting...I saw a different video.
Edited on Fri Apr-17-09 02:53 PM by Lucky Luciano
The video I saw did not include the baton hit. It just showed the shove that came afterwards.

Note that I did say that I thought it was an assault above though.

I obviously take back all that I said above.

Here is what I saw - I only saw the raw video and not the one with the commentary or slow motion.

8. Splenic rupture and exsanguination is what I expect he died from
Still find it hard to believe the cops tried to cover it up.

Of course, that is why they are trying to make it a crime to take pix of cops in the UK (Recent UK law makes it an offense to film an 'officer' who is 'combating terrorism')

Without the videos this unrestrained police aggression would have simply disappeared. Nor was it the only incident, just the only one that resulted in death.

Doubt the cop wanted to kill, just to prove to his pals what a tough guy he is.

10. A terrible shame and horrible cover up.
I am with you - all who tried to cover up this death should be thrown in the slammer along with the murdering cop. I totally agree that the cop had absolutely no intent to kill (and was trying to be mr toughguy), but like a drunk driver who kills, he should be charged with murder/manslaughter for making the unprovoked attack resulting in the man's death.

11. And simply walking home from work.
Anyone who *doesn't* believe this could happen to "just anybody" needs to STFU.

13. Independent Police Complaints Commission was barred from 1st post mortem
The Independent Police Complaints Commission claims it was denied access to Ian Tomlinson's first post mortem.

Channel 4 News has learned that the IPCC asked to be present during the first post mortem examination carried out on Ian Tomlinson but the coroner refused. He had the legal right to do so but who told him to keep the IPCC out?

Tonight The Liberal Democrats are demanding a full independent inquiry into whether there was a deliberate police cover up.
