Mexico, Colombia compete for US anti-narcotics funds
Source: AFP

PORT OF SPAIN (AFP) — As US President Barack Obama arrived at his first summit with Latin American leaders on Friday, two countries are jostling for a share of billions of dollars of US anti-narcotics aid.

Colombia and Mexico, the two biggest US allies in the region, are keen to win assurances from Obama that his Democrat government will keep giving them money to bolster their military capabilities against drug traffickers.

Colombia has greatly benefited under Obama's predecessors, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Since 2000 it has received 5.5 billion dollars.

But Mexico would also welcome more cash to wage its war against vicious drug gangs, which has killed 7,300 people so far this year and which threatens to spill over the border into the United States.

1. And the scam continues, unabated.
We've been pouring money into eradicating supply since the 80s. Result? More drugs (and violence) than ever. As the dumbass Dr. Phil would say, "How's that working for ya?".

Also, it looks like Rush Limbaugh et al have won the terminology war. Looks like official news sources are now calling us Democrat.

"Colombia and Mexico, the two biggest US allies in the region, are keen to win assurances from Obama that his Democrat government will keep giving them money to bolster their military capabilities against drug traffickers."

Wouldn't it be Democratic government?

2. oh.....gimme a break...
A dime is too much and a trillion is too little. This has nothing to do with drugs or anti drugs..it has to do with corruption on both sides of the US border. Waging "war" against drugs is futile and even counterproductive. Police action is needed to take on the criminal gangs, but that is impossible because the drug "war" has corrupted all enforcement agencies and bureaucracies.....including those in the USA.
When are we going to wise up and realize that doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result is the definition of stupidity?
I don't think this country is going to make it.

4. I had a tiny ray of hope until I saw Obama smirk at legalizing marijuana.
That's when I knew it was going to be business as usual. Sadly, it may take a Republican to change national drug laws because I don't think any Democrat that has the guts would be left standing by the media and GOP.

But really, imagine what billions of dollars could do right now.

6. more money for the drug cartels to buy weapons
the hundreds of billions spent over the years on the war on drugs has`t accomplished anything but more death and destruction.

7. I agree. Everyone wants money from the US while they sit on their laurels and
allow the drug industry go forward.
