Four Corners spot is 2.5 miles off
Source: DenverPost.com

Tourists who want to put a hand or foot in each of four states at the Four Corners area are apparently off the mark — by more than a couple miles. According to readings by the National Geodetic Survey, the Four Corners marker showing the intersection of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah is about 2.5 miles west of where it should be.

The only place in the United States where four state boundaries come together was first surveyed by the U.S. government in 1868 during the initial survey of Colorado's southern boundary line.

The intended location was 109 degrees west longitude and 37 degrees north latitude. But, because of surveying errors, the popular tourist spot is actually just a bit off.

The accurate location would be downhill to the east of U.S. 160 in Colorado and northeast of the San Juan River as it flows into New Mexico.

32. 30 minutes at 500 degrees ought to work.
Since oven thermostats tend to vary, start checking for vital signs at 20 minutes and every 5 minutes thereafter until there are none.

35. Reminds me of an old Art Linkletter "Kids Say the Darndest Things"
He once asked a kid what she liked to eat. She replied "enchiladas". He asked how her mom made them. She replied that her mom caught them, then put them in the oven and baked them until they didn't kick any more.

8. Google Earth agrees, check out the location 37N 109w..
They aren't far off on the 37N but way off on the 109W, about 2m 42s

The actual location looks a lot tougher to build a road to.

12. Hey, I want my money back -- from when I visited there decades ago!
;-)

But the correct location would not be "in" Colorado -- rather at the edges of each of the four states.

This revives a question I used to ask people: What's the fewest number of states between Kansas and California?

15. They may have put it in the wrong place
but it is still the legal definition of where the borders are. The marker will stay where it is.

though it didn't indicate 2.5 miles off, it did tell us the monument was in the wrong place. i saw that sign back in 1993!

19. So, is it easier to move the marker or redefine the borders?
Maybe the borders aren't wrong, just where they thought the borders were is wrong. The border is actually at 109 degrees, 42 minutes, 2 seconds West longitude.

There, problem solved. For my next trick: how to solve the financial crisis. Oops, I'm late, gotta go. Sorry.

21. If that mark is where the original surveyor placed it
then that is the boundary. It's more so the boundary since all 4 states have accepted it as such.

26. Native North Americans are just SO disappointed that their invaders are confused
.
.
.

The so-called USA was a self-sufficient collection of nations before the white man invaded, occupied and slaughtered the existing population

yeah

although my family didn't arrive until the 1900's, when most of the slaughter was done . .

I have no pride in being a white man in this country/continent.

(sigh)

30. Me thinks the so-called Canada was also a collection of nations before whites
invaded, occupied, conspired to get the indigenous people to fight their wars for them, and then in gratitude tried to extinguish the culture of its lands indigenous peoples.
