Colo. House votes to eliminate death penalty

DENVER (AP) - The Colorado House has approved a plan to eliminate the death penalty and use the money to focus on cold cases. The measure now goes to the Senate.

The measure passed Tuesday by a single vote, 33-32, after victims' relatives asked lawmakers to help with unsolved slayings.

Rep. Ed Vigil, D-Fort Garland, cast the tie-breaking vote.

At least it's a start - it needs to go to the Senate which is also Democratic, and then we'll have it OFF the table.

1. Not a very good majority

but it seems that with Stupid out of office, civilization might be breaking out all over.

The NM lege passed the abolition of the DP with a more comfortable majority, although it still required the governor's signature. I don't know if they'd overridden a veto and I am glad they didn't have to.

A vicious right wing group is running pro DP ads on TV, shrieking their fear and savagery to the skies.

It doesn't seem to be persuading anyone. This state has never been that comfortable with the DP and had executed only one person since 1961.
