BAGHDAD, April 23 (Reuters) - Abu Omar al-Baghdadi,
the purported leader of the Islamic State of Iraq,
an al-Qaeda-linked insurgent group, has been captured,
Iraqi state television said on Thursday.

The insurgent group is one of a handful of Sunni Arab
extremist groups blamed for suicide bombings and other
attacks in the northern city of Mosul and other parts
of Iraq.

Violence has dropped sharply since the height of sectarian
killing 2006-07, but attacks continue. (Editing

The leader of al-Qaida in Iraq, Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, was arrested by Iraqi troops in south-eastern Baghdad this morning in a raid being hailed as the most serious blow to the insurgency for three years.

The arrest was swiftly followed by a string of bomb attacks across the country, with four explosions killing as many as 40 people.

Baghdadi was arrested shortly after 10am by military intelligence officials attached to the sixth brigade of the Iraqi army in Resafa district, south-eastern Baghdad.

The arrest is believed to have taken place after a clash between Iraqi soldiers and al-Qaida fighters. It was confirmed by Major General Qassem Attar, the head of Baghdad's security plan, the television network al-Iraqia said.

U.S. Says Insurgent Leader It Couldn’t Find Never Was

By MICHAEL R. GORDON
Published: July 18, 2007

BAGHDAD, July 18 — For more than a year, the leader of one the most notorious insurgent groups in Iraq was said to be a mysterious Iraqi called Abu Omar al-Baghdadi.

As the titular head of the Islamic State in Iraq, Mr. Baghdadi issued incendiary pronouncements. Despite claims by an Iraqi Interior Ministry official in May that Mr. Baghdadi had been killed, he appeared to have persevered unscathed.

On Wednesday, the chief United States military spokesman here, Brig. Gen. Kevin J. Bergner, provided a new explanation for Mr. Baghdadi’s ability to escape attack:he never existed.

General Bergner told reporters that a senior Iraqi insurgent captured this month said that the elusive Mr. Baghdadi was actually a fictional character whose declarations on audiotape were read by a man named Abu Abdullah al-Naima.

5. The Scarlet Pimpernel
The Scarlet Pimpernel is a classic play and adventure novel by Baroness Emmuska Orczy, set during the Reign of Terror following the start of the French Revolution. The story is a precursor to the "disguised superhero" tales such as Zorro, Superman and Batman.

The play was produced and adapted by Julia Neilson and Fred Terry. It first opened on 15 October 1903 at Nottingham’s Theatre Royal; it was not a success. Terry, however, had confidence in the play, and with a rewritten last act, he took it to London, where it opened at the New Theatre on 5 January 1905. The standing ovation of the first night audience proved him right, but the critics criticized it as old-fashioned. Despite that, the play became a popular success. It began a run of 122 performances and numerous revivals, becoming a favourite of the London audiences and playing more than 2,000 performances, one of the most popular shows staged to that date in England.

10. again?
Iraqi government’s claim that the organization’s second most important leader had been arrested, Hamed Jumaa Farid al-Saeedi, also known as Abu Humam or Abu Rana, and said that had left al-Qaida in Iraq suffering a “serious leadership crisis.”

Iraqi and coalition forces tracked down and killed Abu Azzam, the second most wanted al Qaeda leader in Iraq. This guy is a brutal killer. He was one of Zarqawi's top lieutenants. He was reported to be the top operational commander of al Qaeda in Baghdad. He is one of the terrorists responsible for the recent upsurge in attacks in the Iraqi capital.
