BAGHDAD - Two female suicide bombers hiding explosives in their purses struck worshippers outside a heavily guarded Shiite shrine Friday in Baghdad, killing at least 66 people.
Violence in Iraq has dropped to its lowest levels since the months following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, but an increase in suicide bombings and other devastating attacks in recent weeks has renewed concerns about the capabilities of Iraq's security forces.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki ordered an investigation into security shortcomings that allowed the assailants to slip through. He also suspended the area commanders for failing to provide adequate security around the shrine in the northern Baghdad neighborhood of Kazimiyah, where Friday's attack took place.
The female bombers, believed to be in their 30s, detonated explosives that were stuffed inside their leather bags and linked to a grenade, according to Maj. Gen. Jihad al-Jabiri, the head of the Interior Ministry's explosives department
