Retired Drew ethics professor, Clinton mentor Jones dies at 78
Source: Daily Record (Morris County NJ)

The Rev. Donald Jones, a retired Drew University ethics professor who became a lifelong friend and adviser to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton after serving as her youth minister in the early 1960s, has died.

<snip>
Jones arrived at Clinton's Park Ridge, Ill., church in 1961, when Clinton was in ninth grade. In her memoir, Clinton wrote that she had "never met anyone like him."

Jones, for instance, took Clinton with a youth group to hear the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. preach in Chicago in 1962. Some students in the youth group were not allowed by their parents to attend a speech by "such a 'rabble-rouser,' " Clinton wrote.

Later in life, Clinton said Jones gave her support and counsel when President Bill Clinton admitted having an affair with intern Monica Lewinsky.

This is from my local paper, in the county where Drew is located. This is a gift to Beacool and others. Since the 1990s there were many accounts of how he profoundly changed her opinions and values. It still took a few years in college to move her from her family's Republican values - though he likely should get credit as the man who started her move in that direction.

1. Thank you for your thoughtful post.
Rev. Jones was a breath of fresh air to the kids in that church. He shook them from their upper middle class complacency and showed him how the other half of the world lived. These kids had never seen poverty in the inner city. He took them on field trips, including to hear Dr. King speak. He had a profound influence in Hillary's life and remained a friend for life. She must be devastated by his death, he was a good man.

My condolences to his family and Hillary. Rest in peace....
