Brazil calls for Cuba to be allowed into IMF

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The International Monetary Fund should allow Cuba to become a member, Brazilian Finance Minister Guido Mantega said on Saturday.

Cuba was a member of the IMF until 1964, when it left under revolutionary leader Fidel Castro following his confrontation with the United States.

Mantega said Cuba "is the only country in the Western Hemisphere that is not a member of this institution. The time has come to open the doors."

"In a climate of (new) understanding, it would be an additional step" to help Cuba, he told the IMF's International Monetary and Financial Committee.

By "correcting an omission that has lasted a long time," Mantega said, the IMF could reach its goal of "universal membership."

"We want Cuba to rejoin the world economy," Mantega later told a press conference.

1. According to DU's Cuba "experts*" Cuba's economic problems are all Castro's fault.

Nothing to do with the US's extra territorial sanctions, the US's travel ban, nor this.

* - By Cuba "experts" I am referring to the inumerable number of posters who have never been there and haven't even done remedial study on the island, but with strongly opinionated know-nothing pronouncements.

4. Right! Cuba belongs to the US right-wing & must surrender to them, beg forgiveness
for overthrowing the racist, murderous, greedy scum which controlled Cuba before the revolution, and Cuba must also allow the Mafia to take over Havana again, and return it to the condition it was in when it was known as "The Whorehouse of the Caribbean." Together the racist murdering fascists and the Mafia can once again cater to rich American interests, and resurrect the death squads to sweep dissenters off the streets and hang what's left of them from lamp poles after rounds of torture.

Texas, however, can secede from a US with Obama as President. :silly:

Cuba, which does NOT belong to the US, must surrender, and Texas can refuse to participate in the nation until a real redneck becomes President again.

2. I thought Brazil was a friend to Cuba.
If the IMF has ever done anything positive for a struggling country (no, I don't mean enriching their ruling class) I have yet to hear about it. Next thing you know, they'll be advocating for USAID and the World Bank.

Does Cuba even have any natural resources the alphabet NGOs want to steal?

5. Lula didn't mention forcing Cuba to comply with IMF dictate.
Must've missed that part.

8. Cuba didn't make the request.
Cuba quit the IMF of their own volition, the same will apply to their possible rejoining.

11. My point is: That Lula made the comment, not anyone from Cuba.
And, if the IMF grants Cuba membership, that doesn't meant that Cuba will follow IMF dictates. Cuba will (continue to) do what's best for Cuba.

Cheers. :hi:

7. One of my fears.....
...is that trade relations with Cuba will be "normalized", and Big Corporate "Developers" will do to Cuba what they did to Cancun.

9. Cuba isn't Mexico.
"Big Corporate "Developers"" will have to comply with Cuba's standards. There are "Big Corporate "Developers"" already there, just not American.

Have no fear, the Cubans are not going to just roll over for Americans.
