Grippe porcine : l'état d'urgence sanitaire déclaré aux Etats-Unis
Source: LEMONDE.FR

78. HERE IS THE TRANSLATION
New cases of people infected by virus H1N1 of the swine flu were released Sunday April 26. In the United States, the person in charge of the Health Department of the city of New York Thomas Frieden declared Sunday that the American Center for Disease Control(CDC) had confirmed that eight New York students were infected by the swine flu. The assessment is there are 20 proven cases of swine flu in the United States.

" MUCH MORE DANGEROUS"

The World Health Organization considers the situation " serious" and " unpredictable" and " evolving quickly". The disease touches " young adults with good health" , and the change of the virus is new, " difficulty in functioning because of the disease" according to WHO World Health Organization. Sunday, at the time of the press press conference, the vice-president of this organization who did not hide; had to be considered the most worrying assumptions. " It is extremely possible that as the virus evolves, it is clear that it can become more dangerous for the population" , he said.

27. Wait. We had 75 sick kids in Queens at St. Francis.
But we only tested blood from nine. Eight came up positive for piggy flu. But that doesn't mean 8 cases is all we got. Figure at least 70 from St. Francis. "Confirmed cases" is beginning to make me twitch. Judging by NY, the real number of cases is maybe ten times that?

69. 20 at the time when the Mexican doctor wrote this:
I work as a resident doctor in one of the biggest hospitals in Mexico City and sadly, the situation is far from "under control". As a doctor, I realise that the media does not report the truth. Authorities distributed vaccines among all the medical personnel with no results, because two of my partners who worked in this hospital (interns) were killed by this new virus in less than six days even though they were vaccinated as all of us were. The official number of deaths is 20, nevertheless, the true number of victims are more than 200. I understand that we must avoid to panic, but telling the truth it might be better now to prevent and avoid more deaths.

11. An attempt at translation:
Edited on Sun Apr-26-09 10:19 PM by DLnyc
Actual person translation:

-------

New cases of people attacked by the H1N1 virus of swine flu have been (signaled?) 26 April. In the United States, the (head?) of health services in the city of New York, Thomas Frieden, said Sunday that the American Centers of Control and Prevention of Diseases (CDC) had confirmed that eight New York students (came down with?) swine flu. The total is (now?) 20 cases (confirmed?) of swine flu in the United States.

"Much more dangerous (plural)"

The World Health Organization considers the situation "serious" and "(?unpredictable?) and "quickly evolving". The disease affects "young adults in good health", and the mutation of the virus is unexpected, "in (genes?) never encountered before" according to WHO. Sunday, during a press conference, the vice president of the organization did not hide that it is necessary to (consider?) the most disquieting hypotheses: "It is very possible that the virus is evolving. When viruses evolve, it is clear that they may become much more dangerous to populations", he said.

-----

If I understand correctly stuff I've read on this board and through various links, the fact that it is affecting "'young adults in good health'" is worrying, pointing to an ironic situation where those with a stronger immune system are more at risk, since they may be susceptible to "storm" of immune reaction . . . I'm sure someone else can explain this better than me, but it seems to be similar to the 1918 flu in that respect.

46. bien fait,,,,,, (well done!)
Well, there is a paradox in immunology here, but we have thousands of times more ability than the world had 90 years ago to combat this.

FIRST, note that Mexicans are the only people so far who have died from this.
Do we know anything about the relative health and age and condition of those Mexicans who have died? NO! We know only a little about ages of those contracting the virus.

SECOND" We have no cases in the USA so far that have led to deaths. This may mean that Mexico had thousands and thousands of cases and only now when some few have died, (those being in conditions of health yet undisclosed, or unknown), many Mexicans may have suffered the flu much like the few dozen in the USA are now suffering, mild to moderate, below the level requiring hospitalization, and recovering in a week or two.... might have been this way in Mexico for months and months for thousands, and we may never know.

NOW THIRD: Tamiflu, and diet/vitamins/blood transfusions, oxygen tanks, IV fluids, etc etc ....not around in 1918........today, available in any hospital. No air conditioning in 1918 either....no climate control, no antiseptic soaps, no autoclaves in all dental offices.

EVEN IF... this is the big one, the big evolution of a virus strain....we have ways of isolating, treating, keeping sanitary, nurishing, and aiding in recovery of the most ill among us.... and .... we have the potential in 3-6 months of a vaccine for those most at risk and targeted to cities and towns most needy.

In short, don't panic yet!

The wrong people are dying. Every country with an airport is worried. But. Not. You.

38. As a bi-lingual (French/English) American, I appreciate
threads started today in French.

Although, I am not sure we are supposed to do this without translations.

LeMonde publishes most of its articles in English, by the way, there is a large English readership around the world who wants to know what is in LeMonde, (the world) daily.

Babelfish.........translation of paragraph by paragraph, approximations by computer...

http://babelfish.yahoo.com/

Put a paragraph in there, (may be limited by number of characters), and push the right buttons... I am sure most people on computers can figure this out if they are smart enough to belong to the DU.

41. But seriously, folks--this thread has got me remembering that Italian reporter
whose car was fired upon just outside the Baghdad airport. We had to rely on the Italian media to get the story--and upon the DUers who translated the stories for us!

47. Yeah, that was back in the BUSH, (translation: LIES) days...
We have a president who will tell us the truth, if not tomorrow, by Wednesday, for sure.

By the way, nothing in the French link quoted gave any more information, (just other totals of sick, less numbers in the USA) than we got from the presser today at the White House.

65. Lovely. But it doesn't add anything to what's been posted
elsewhere. The Lebanon story at least gave something from a slightly different perspective, but this one doesn't say anything more than what the 40 other swine flu postings have said already.

But, granted, it does say it in French, so I'll lift my glass of wine to that. (Oops, tonight's selection is from Italy!)

Notice that the pig is actually to blame for the chain of events given its fixation on humankind's thighs.

79. I never got a chance to use many of the nice little phrases...
....I learned from Merde! & Merde Encore! The French were too nice and all I ever got to do was exchange pleasantries and engage in interesting conversation with them.

I've been waiting twenty years to fire that off to someone.:)
