Company pulls plug on `Fallujah' video game
Source: AP

NEW YORK (AP) — The publisher behind a video game based on one of the Iraq war's fiercest battles has pulled the plug on the title, called "Six Days in Fallujah."

A spokeswoman for Japanese game company Konami Digital Entertainment Inc. confirmed that the company is no longer publishing the game, which was set to go on sale next year.

The game sought to re-create the 2004 Fallujah battle from the perspective of a U.S. Marine fighting against insurgents. It was developed by Atomic Games with input from the Marines.

Konami had advertised "Six Days" as a shooting game "unlike any other," combining "authentic weaponry, missions and combat set against the gripping story of the U.S. Marines on the ground." The game was criticized by veterans groups and others who called it inappropriate.

12. Call of Duty 4
Depicted combat in a Middle Eastern country with US marines, I guess because it wasn't a real combat it did not raise too much of a stink.

17. It was a fictitious unnamed country though.
One of the SOCOM games did the same thing (though the country was obviously Algeria.) It was also controversial though because of one of the missions involving fighting pirates in Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi government whined, so they changed the level to just "South Asia".

6. Next, on Bad Idea Theatre!
Oy. WTF was Atomic thinking with this one? I know they have a couple of modern-day Close Combat-type games, but I'm pretty sure they at least made a pretense of abstracting those a bit instead of making explicitly about, y'know, a major coalition defeat.

7. Black Hawk Down
from Novalogic was one of the best games ever. The story follows the rescue leading up to Black Hawk Down and the shootout to escape. I was surprised at the time the pc police didn't get the game pulled. Lot's of games follow real battles.

8. True, but isn't it customary to WAIT until a decade or two later?
Even Panzer Blitz waited, and it was one of the first.

14. They pissed and moaned about 'BHD' too.
Best game ever.

But I remember people whining about it.

Novalogic also made a game about Afghanistan.

15. Did you think BHD was
edumacational and probably true to the story?

It was controversial because some people probably enjoyed shooting a lot of black people a little too much.

16. It wasn't very true and I wouldn't say it was educational.
Maybe all the events in it (well except the ending) were real, but they weren't as in the game. Bit too high of a body count. Fun game though.

I don't have any problems with a game based on Fallujah either by the way. It doesn't endorse the Iraq war anymore than Apocalypse Now or The Deer Hunter endorses the Vietnam War.
