Multiple fatalities in Monterey County bus crash

Authorities reported "multiple fatalities" in a tour bus crash this afternoon on U.S. 101 in Monterey County.

The crash occurred about 3:20 p.m., and authorities were sending emergency personnel to the scene near the town of Soledad. Officials said a number of bus passengers were hurt.

California Highway Patrol Officer Erica Elias told the Associated Press that few details were immediate available but that the Gilroy office was sending its multi-accident investigation team to the scene. The AP said at least two people were confirmed dead. KSBW-TV said up to 10 people died.

The Salinas Californian reported that the crash occurred on an overpass of the 101.

(04-28) 17:23 PDT Soledad -- A tour bus flipped over on a Highway 101 overpass north of Soledad this afternoon, with the California Highway Patrol reporting at least 38 injuries. News reports from the scene said as many as 10 passengers were killed.

The CHP has shut down the freeway in both directions and helicopter ambulances have been called to the scene. The accident occurred just before 3:30 p.m. on the overpass at Camphora Gloria Road.

The bus reportedly was carrying French-Canadian tourists and heading southbound to Los Angeles.

SOLEDAD, Calif. -- At least six people were killed and dozens more injured when a tour bus crashed near Soledad, Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital officials said.

An Camphora Gloria Road off of Highway 101.

Three or four people were ejected from the bus during the crash.

There are eight people in critical condition and at least 40 others being treated at SVMH, hospital officials said.

Adrienne Laurent, of SVMH, said originally the number of those killed was 10 but CHP downgraded that number to six at about 5:30 p.m.

"We had a tour bus traveling south on Highway 101, crossing thorough the city of Soledad," said Brian West, of the California Highway Patrol. "The bus overturned and passengers were ejected."

The day-night tour bus was carrying tourists from France who were heading from San Francisco to Santa Maria, officials at Orion Pacific officials said.
