N Korea threatens nuclear tests

North Korea has threatened to carry out nuclear missile tests unless the UN Security Council apologises for its condemnation of a recent rocket launch.

Pyongyang said it would be compelled to take self-defence measures "including nuclear and intercontinental ballistic missile tests" if no apology was made.

When North Korea launched its rocket on 5 April, the launch was seen by the US and others as a disguised missile test.

The UN denounced North Korea's actions and called for tighter sanctions.

Pyongyang has insisted it put a communications satellite in orbit, and said it would ignore the sanctions, describing them as "a wanton violation of the UN charter".

-- North Korea threatened to conduct a nuclear test and more ballistic missile tests if the U.N. Security Council doesn't withdraw its condemnation of Pyongyang's rocket launch earlier this month, the state-run Korean Central News Agency reported.

The U.N. Security Council "should promptly make an apology for having infringed the sovereignty of and withdraw all its unreasonable and discriminative 'resolutions' and decisions adopted against ," a spokesman for the North's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"The measures will include nuclear tests and test-firings of intercontinental ballistic missiles," the unidentified spokesman said.

The statement also said Pyongyang will start building a light-water nuclear power plant and begin production of nuclear fuel.
