Gunmen open fire on Japanese ambassador on visit to Iraq’s Anbar

A convoy carrying the Japanese ambassador to Iraq came under fire in Ramadi in western Iraq.

The ambassador Shoji Ogawa escaped unscathed but one of the Iraqi bodyguards assigned for his protection was killed.

The ambassador was visiting Ramadi, the capital of the restive Province of Anbar, to inspect projects financed by his country’s government.

Japan has withdrawn its troops from Iraq but is keeping a high profile in the country through donations of millions of dollars.
