Palin: Letterman owes apology to 'young women'
Source: USA Today

A feisty Sarah Palin just told Matt Lauer on the Today show that Letterman doesn't owe her an apology for the joke about her daughter. "He doesn't have to apologize to me. I would like to see him to apologize to young women across the country for contributing to that thread throughout our culture that makes it seem IK to talk about ... statutory rape. It's not cool and it's not funny."

When Lauer brought up that Letterman clarified that he wasn't daughter about her 14-year-old daughter Willow (shown here holding baby Trig), but was targeting 18-year-old Bristol, Palin said, "I would say that you and anybody else are extremely naïve to believe David Letterman's very extremely convenient excuse. ... No wonder young girls have such low self esteem when we think it's funny for a so-called comedian to make a remark like he did and think it's acceptable."

Matt also asked about Palin's statement about declining to appear on Letterman's show, in which she said she has "no intention of providing a ratings boost ... plus it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman." What exactly did that mean?

"Take it however you want to take it," said Palin. "Willow, no doubt would want to stay away from David Letterman," and, "Hey maybe he couldn't be trusted because Willow's had enough of this type of comment! Maybe Willow would want to react to him in a way that would catch him off guard!"

....HER failure as a parent by allowing her underage daughter to get knocked up and give birth to a bastard grandchild of hers?

She the ultimate hypocrite...yes, she should just STFU and go back to gazing out of her living room window at Russia!!

81. It's not Plain's fault that Bristol got pregnant.
It is Palin's fault that the poor girl got dragged all over the media while she was pregnant, and is now a spokesmodel for "abstinence," in the fine Republican tradition of "do what I say, not what I do."

And, while it's not directly Palin's fault that Bristol got pregnant, it kinda shows a pattern that her older son was arrested for vandalism, her older daughter got pregnant at 16, and her youngest son is disabled. What kind of parent is she?

Edited on Fri Jun-12-09 10:07 AM by texanshatingbush
That's what I've read, anyway.

And Palin's implication that "we ALL know that Letterman was really talking about Willow, regardless of what he says", shows, once again, how out-of-touch she is. "Knocked up" was the key word. Or maybe she just doesn't get "sarcasm".

I wish the media would stop giving her airtime.

161. I saw a photo of her, standing in a strip mall with a campaign sign. Snow and ice
were visible. And standing with her, looking very unhappy, was a young girl, who looked about 6 years old. That's what kind of parent I think she is.

BTW, I do think she may be partly to blame for Bristol's pregnancy, but it's only speculation on my part. But, for instance, do you think Bristol could have gone to her and asked about birth control or confided that she was considering sex with what's his name?

I heard it again in his jokes last night, clearly, he cannot leave it alone, either.

In any case, his jokewriters are probably on the hotseat, Letterman will make sure they research the premise behind any further jokes that might impact on minors.

25. I suspect that she may be overplaying her hand
but nothing that she says is ever going to be liked by anybody here. I'd sure be interested to see how her polling numbers are coming out.

She's not campaigning for the Presidency at this point, she's campaigning for the GOP nomination. She has to get more face time in the media than Huckabee, Romney, etc., and Letterman has given her this opportunity. My guess is that her preaching to the choir is getting results. Right now, the right wingers are feeling picked upon, she has seized upon that mentality and is riding it like a racehorse.

65. Gag!
She never knows which side of her mouth she's talking out of, or even what she's saying. She contradicts herself from one sentence to the next, sometimes from one word to the next, or begins spewing an impenetrable word salad. And yes, I'm sure that her preaching to the choir is getting results.

The main problem for her is that the choir she is preaching to is getting smaller. Thank God! Her novelty wore off fast and it's plain to any thinking Republican (there are some few left) that there is no "there" there. What's worse for the backstage controllers is that she's not even biddable to the extent that * and Raygun were. Sarah's all about Sarah and will go off message or do her own thing at any time to keep that fact forward.

I have a recurring fantasy never to have to see or hear her ever again. Reading about her is painful enough. :puke:

84. In a poll earlier this week, she got 4 votes,
out of a thousand people polled, as leader of the Republican party. She's never going to be more popular than she was last year, when she lost the election for McCain. For that, I think the whole country owes her a debt of gratitude.

They just asked in a poll who the leader of the GOP was and most conservatives said "no one"....with Rush and Newty coming in next. Poor Sara got 4 votes out of the entire sample. Not 4%, 4 votes.

There ya go.

It's not just here that no one likes what she says.

Rush and the GOP still act and try to make you think they are a majority. The MSM comply with this fantasy...still having more conservatives on to talk about conservative things. But they are a minority and always have been.

160. I'm doubtful that the particular poll cited was taken after the Letterman thing
I suspect that her visibility has gone up in the last couple of days, and this might reflect in the polls.

In any case, that poll shows she needs to do something desperate to stay viable, and fighting with Letterman over nothing is certainly desperate.

First, he did NOT make any jokes that would impact on minors - Palin is just trying to twist it around that way. I didn't see any hesitation or reservation on his part in last night's monologue and opening bits. Doubtful that his joke writers have any qualms about what they write in the future.

Bristol Palin is 18 years old and not a minor. You actually think he was referring to Willow? Really? You think David Letterman an A-list celebrity watched by millions every night is going to make a joke about a 14 year old girl having sex with Alex Rodriguez? Are you sure you don't want to rethink that?

Of course the first dude will think over exposure means Dave wants to see his wife naked. But he should do Palin bits for years until people beg him to Natalie (cringe) Holloway stories instead. Obama's kids are part of his family, so they show up when there are important times in the life of the family, but are not trotted out to show what a family guy he is.

Palin's kids are part of her set design. As such they are as much subject to comment as the rest of her wardrobe.

her The First Dog. On his short-lived (thank God) TV show, he held up a picture of Socks, the Clinton's cat, and then held up a picture of The First Dog, a picture of Chelsea.
Funny, right?
And did Palin, Hannity, and O'Reilly eviscerate Limbaugh?
No.
Plus, their PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, Palin's running mate, told a horrid joke about "why Chelsea is so ugly. Her father is Janet Reno." McCain did not deny telling the joke, to a room full of adults, no less.
So, when the jokes ARE directed at a liberal's daughter, guess what?
Crickets from the right.

152. No. In my ideal world, children would be exempt
(well, except for Liz and Mary Cheney). Seriously, you bring up a good point. We shouldn't sink to their depths. Letterman's joke was wrong. Wrong. And Palin would have had support here at DU if she had expressed her disappointment. However, she's taken this over the edge. Letterman is now akin to a child molester. She's talking statutory rape and saying "I wouldn't want Willow anywhere near Letterman." Everyone knows, including Palin, that Letterman was talking about the 18 yr. old daughter. The joke was still wrong.
And if the right attacked either of the Obama girls, you bet we'd be outraged.
I would hope that we would not distort the attack the way Palin has.

21. I can't stand Palin one bit. And I like Letterman. But...
Edited on Fri Jun-12-09 07:44 AM by sledgehammer
Letterman's jokes were in pretty poor taste.

And his apology was not a real one. If he didn't feel bad, he shouldn't have apologized. If he did feel bad, then he should have done a straight, simple apology. Not one with the crowd laughing in between.

He's given Palin a golden opportunity. She's going to milk every last drop of this. She would have been smarter to keep her attacks short and simple, but I expect no classiness from her. However, I expect a little bit more from Letterman.

Comparisons to the Obama daughters are not exactly the same because they are much younger and have done nothing to bring unwanted attention to themselves. The Palins made a showcase of Bristol during the campaign, and she made a joke of herself by going on an abstinence tour.

Comedians did make fun of the Bush twins for their antics. But their sexual behavior was taboo. And it should be that way for the children of all politicians. It wouldn't be funny about Meghan McCain or anyone else either.

ETA: BTW, I don't think Letterman needs to apologize to young women. It's clear to everyone he was talking about Bristol and it had nothing to do with the 14-year old daughter.

Edited on Fri Jun-12-09 07:52 AM by mnhtnbb
she's going to be fodder for the comedians.

So, either STFU or stop putting your kids in situations
where you and they are going to be the butt of jokes.

But, that's too obvious, isn't it?

Gawd, I wish the woman would just go away. Or better yet, the media
would ignore her. What a loser.

Too stupid to use birth control herself past the age of 40 with four kids and a full-time job.
Too stupid to teach her daughter about birth control. So narcissistic that she'll take advantage
of any opportunity for publicity including exploiting all her kids.

37. They both behaved badly & both should call it quits
Letterman's joke was in bad taste even if it was aimed at the older daughter. And his apology didn't come across as sincere. Palin, however, should have shown some class (yeah, I know - as if!) & simply accepted Dave's apology. She would have come across as the better person for a change. But of course, she isn't, so she looks like what she is - desperate for attention & willing to use her children to get it.

Shame on both of them.

That's called "late night TV". It's for insomniacs who like to tell off-color jokes and see what they can put past the censor. Letterman got exactly what he and his writers were aiming for: "damn, that was nasty, I'll have to remember to tell that one at work tomorrow". I expect now that Dubya has receded from the stage and Letterman has to find someone to be the butt of jokes like 'Great Moments in Presidential Speeches', Sarah will pick up the slack just fine. Especially with that stupid, whore-with-bubblegum wink that she has.

56. Message to Sarah Palin:
YOU are the one who used your children for political purposes.

YOU whored them out to the media first.

If you wanted to protect your children, you would have never done that in the first place. But because it was politically expedient for you to do so at the time, you had no problem with that.

You do not want women to have choices. Abstinence only education doesn't work, statistics prove it and your very own daughter has proven it. So if anyone owes women an apology, it is YOU, Sarah Palin, for being the stereotypical hypocritical corrupt Republican, who wants to force your agenda and values on everyone else, to hell with their personal beliefs.

You'd put women's equality back more than a hundred years if things were done your way.

Shut the hell up, publicity whore. You prostituted your children first, so you have no one to blame but yourself for the outcome. Look in the mirror, Sarah: YOU ARE A BAD MOTHER!

It's Sarah Palin who owes women apologies for her daily embarrassments to the female sex.

90. Palin
She exploted her children. At the Republican convention, the VP debate, and Rally afterword she dragged her special needs baby like
a prop. There are plenty of women with careers who don't do this. And the explortion of her daughters Is just sick. She opens the door
to this.Republicans made fun of Chelesa Clinton.

They basiclly called David Letterman a child molester by saying their 14 year old daughter wouldn't be safe around him.In my
oporion this Is worse.Any smart person knows exactly who he made the joke about.Comedians often don't let the exact facts get In
way of Jokes.

And a 18 year old women who Is a huge hypcrote by having sex, calling having the baby a mistake, and becoming spokesman for
Absentce Is fair game.

Palin needs to shut up and go back to Alaska.

Palin's rant brought and WHY does any media outlet with half a brain contribute to this crap?

92. Why is this breaking news?
Why is this even news?

This was tabloid flap on Wednesday and now it shows up in LBN and is getting replies like it is really important.

Who gives a flying fuck what Palin thinks about what Letterman said on his late night entertainment show about a nobody.

94. She just doesn't know when to stop, does she?
She rightfully had Dave cornered, and now she's throwing away her sympathy points by turning his apology into a partisan crusade. She must think WE'RE naive if she thinks we're not seeing through her!

95. Palin is no christian.
You know you can only be a hypocrite for so long until people begin to wonder. Being vindictive and saying that his apology wasn't enough is not being a good christian at all. She should be ashamed of the poor example she is showing her children on a daily basis. I'm not trying to judge her but only stating how things look. I feel very sorry for her young kids.

and STOP giving her a platform to spew her filth.

Letterman, Conan, et al should just IGNORE her.

Shut off the exposure and she goes away, except maybe for Fux and CNN.

Quit giving her the media spotlight.

Gov. Palin, you were completely unprepared to be president, and it was unpatriotic of you to accept the VP slot on the ticket.

You owe us an apology, and I'm still waiting for it.

142. Palin owes apology to raped women in Alaska, who she made PAY FOR THEIR OWN RAPE KITS
I don't want to hear this woman-hating monster try to tell ANYONE ANYTHING about rape & women.

She has some nerve after the way she treats rape victims in her state. Making the victims pay to have evidence collected in their own crimes!
Not ensuring that they will have emergency contraception, and then having the chutzpah to tell them if they get pregnant they should bear their rapists children.

She is a woman hating monster - she has NO ROOM TO TELL ANYONE ANYTHING ABOUT JACK SHIT.

He's a stand up guy and has already apologised. I also thought it was pretty clear that he wasn't refering to her 14 year old daughter. Yet Palin refuses to accept that. She just wants to continue the culture war, because that's all the GOP is good at. I just hope America isn't buying her crap.

164.  Conservative Andrew Sullivan's well thought out take on this......
Here's conservative Andrew Sullivan's well thought out take on this......

The Trainwreck Of Sarah Palin

It's getting worse. This is a classic:

"The Palins have no intention of providing a ratings boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show. Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman," PalinPAC spokeswoman Meghan Stapleton said Wednesday.

So Letterman is a child abuser for making a tasteless joke? But the surrealism and narcissism of the Wasilla nutcase is what stands out:

"First, remember in the campaign, Barack Obama said, 'Family's off limits. You don't talk about my family.' "And the candidate who must be obeyed, everybody adhered to that and they did leave his family alone. They haven't done that on the other side of the ticket and it has continued to this day so that's a political double standard."

So brandishing a special needs infant as a campaign prop was putting your family off-limits? Pushing your own daughter into the klieglights to divert attention from your own fantastic lies is family-protective? Pushing Bristol Palin into an absurd abstinence campaign to gin up support from the Christianist right is looking after your kids? Palin reaps what she sows. And she clings to any whisp of victimhood like the attention-starved celebreality star she really is.
