Ohio teen sentenced in parking lot noose attack

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – A central Ohio teenager accused of putting a noose around a Hispanic boy's neck and dragging him in a parking lot has been sentenced to 10 days in jail.

The 18-year-old was sentenced Wednesday in juvenile court in Mount Vernon, a city of 15,000 residents an hour's drive northeast of Columbus. He dropped his original plea of not guilty and pleaded no contest to ethnic intimidation.

A charge of aggravated menacing was dropped.

Seventeen-year-old Robert Cantu says in May 2008 he was dragged from a sidewalk to a parking lot with the noose wrapped around his neck by a group of teenagers shouting racial slurs. He says the teens threatened to hang him before a bystander intervened.

His family says it plans to sue the city, dubbed the state's Most Livable Community in 1994.

3. The teen boys in my home town in PA

were sentenced yesterday, and they got a few months - up to two years, I think - for the simple assaults for which they were convicted for beating a Mexican man to death while screaming ethnic slurs at him.

Not a whole lot to be proud of for me or for my old homies, none of whom still lives there, but the Feds are investigating, and I'm hoping they'll bring civil rights violations against these thugs:

8. The prosecutor, an elected offical,

a Republican, I might add - the area, hideously economically depressed, is all red, so go figure - put on the WORST case imaginable. Just this side of competent, and I'm being generous. It was shocking.

The jurors, very good people who took their job very seriously, followed the instructions exactly, and all they could convict them on were the simple assault charges, and that was because the prosecutor did such a rotten job.

Afterwards, a couple of jurors were interviewed, and they spoke about how hogtied they felt, but they had to follow the instructions, which was exactly right.

Now, with the Feds investigating, I'm hoping to hell that Federal charges are brought against these thugs. One of them is the grand-nephew of my best little friend when we were growing up, and even Jim thinks the whole thing is shameful. The boy's mother, by the way, dates a cop in the town, and he was - it's fairly common knowledge - instrumental in helping the boys get their stories together the day after, before they were arrested.

It's no surprise to find out that the Feds are also investigating the local police department, an act that began BEFORE this murder took place.

And it was such a gorgeous place to grow up, all those years ago.......................

The "victim" was the one raping the 14 year old sister of his fiance and mother of his children. I couldn't find much sympathy for the attackers or the victim.
