Left on Your Dial
http://www.nypost.com/entertainment/19564.htm

The long talked-about liberal talk radio network has finally found an affiliate in New York - WLIB-AM, The Post has learned.

Air America, as the network will be known, is also expected to announce that outspoken comedian Janeane Garofalo will join pit-bull humorist Al Franken in its line-up.

The left-leaning network is backed mainly by well-heeled Democrats who want a counter-balance to conservative powerhouses like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Michael Savage.

<snip>

South Florida liberal Randi Rhodes will follow Franken and be up against Sean Hannity (WABC), Bill O'Reilly and Bob Grant (both on WOR) in New York.

She told her West Palm Beach listeners this week that she plans to "bury" Hannity and Grant.

2. There better be plans for webcasting
They won't effect any serious change unless they can reach people in non-metro areas.

3. We'll never hear it out here in the Midwest
WLIB operates on 1190 kcs., with a severely truncated pattern to protect WOWO in Fort Wayne.

Here's the night-time pattern:

And here's the day-time pattern:

Note that they blow most their signal out to sea.

but it's a START!

4. Thanks for posting that, BiggJawn
Can't wait until us West Coasters have access. Agreed, though, that it's a start!

Radio-locator.com is a great site for checking out coverage of stations.

5. Radio signal coverage
All AM stations carry better over water. It seems a waste, but that's physics.

It's not just NY guys, they have stations in LA, Philly, Miami, SF and WNTD in Chicago. I believe they are looking for more stations too.

6. If it's AM, there's hope
At least for people on the East Coast.

With a full-ground earth and a directional antenna, there should be no problem picking up the signal. At night, the station should be audible all across the country, but you'd be best off with a good quality AM receiver, maybe a shortwave radio with an AM broadcast band. This process is sometimes called "DXing" and there are lots of websites dealing with it.

However, I don't doubt that this is only the start. In a year, who knows how many stations will carry these programs?

Soon, the Twilight of the Chickenhawks will fall.

9. I want my Air America!
How can we get these radio programs around the country. All we hear is clear channel crap. Thankfully we do get NPR but I would listen to Janeane and Al daily too.

Good luck to them all!
