AP NewsBreak: Feds name 8th NC terror suspect
By MIKE BAKER, Associated Press Writer 1 hr 13 mins ago

RALEIGH, N.C. – Federal prosecutors are naming an eighth suspect they say is tied to a ring of would-be terrorists in North Carolina.

An unsealed copy of an indictment released Monday names the suspect as Jude Kenan Mohammad. Documents say Mohammad is a U.S. citizen and North Carolina resident who went to Pakistan in October 2008 "to engage in violent jihad," and authorities believe he is still there.

Mohammad's name had been redacted from court papers when the documents were released last week. Prosecutors have said they hope to have Mohammad in custody soon.

The indictment says eight North Carolina men plotted terrorism and traveled over the past three years to Jordan, Kosovo, Pakistan and Israel "to engage in violent jihad."

1. intent is only one piece...
intending to do something and actually doing it are two different things.

They should be charged and tried in a court of law, not a military tribunal or some such thing.

Oh, and "intent to engage in violent jihad" is just that, intent.

2. Well, if someone were intending to murder someone else, I'm all for locking them up
BEFORE they actually do it.

Or would you prefer that we wait until they do something "actual" like bombing a hotel?

4. Is "intent to engage in violent jihad" an actual crime on the books?

6. certainly 'violent jihad' would be...
so it's about proving that there was an organized intent -- something beyond simple verbal proclamations.

I guess my point is that terrorism is a crime, not a military matter. If these men have committed a crime, they should be charged and tried. If not, they should be released.

That's what innocent until proven guilty is all about.

8. I must be missing something. Sounds to me like they're being arraigned in Federal court.
