Duvall resigns following sex scandal
Edited on Wed Sep-09-09 04:04 PM by Qutzupalotl
Source: Orange County Register

Orange County Assemblyman Mike Duvall, R-Yorba Linda, just resigned from office because of reports that he had bragged about having sex with two women who were not his wife.

“I am deeply saddened that my inappropriate comments have become a major distraction for my colleagues in the Assembly, who are working hard on the very serious problems facing our state. I have come to the conclusion that it would not be fair to my family, my constituents or to my friends on both sides of the aisle to remain in office. Therefore, I have decided to resign my office, effective immediately, so that the Assembly can get back to work.”

16. Elliot Spitzer, John Edwards
Democrats and Republicans are pretty even in terms of sex scandals since 1976. Democrats have edged ahead in recent years, but not by much (16-14 since 2000). Republicans led the way in the '80s and '90s.

56. Hmmm, one has to wonder about the objectivity of their "tally"
Barney Franks(D) is now guilty of a "sex scandal" because of something his lover did?

Jim McGreevey(D) resigns after coming out of the closet and that makes the list?

But Dan Burton(R) doesn't make the list despite having an affair and a kid out of wedlock.

But John McCain(R) doesn't make the list despite having "multiple affairs" and dumping his disabled wife after having an affair with his present wife.

But Arnold Schwarzenegger(R) doesn't make the list despite having multiple affairs and getting accused of sexual assault.

But Jeb Bush(R) doesn't make the list despite his sex scandal with Cynthia Henderson. Of course he denies it, even though he appointed a former Playboy bunny to an agency head position for no apparent reason(other than his crooked brother Neil handing her off to him) and then refused to fire her after ethics investigations.

But Bob Barr(R) doesn't make the list despite having an affair, paying for an abortion, and apparently having an affliction for licking whip cream off of multiple women's breasts.

But Philip Giordano(R) doesn't make the list despite going to prison for soliciting sex from underage girls.

Those are just a few examples. I'm sure there's more.

65. Not really
Especially when you consider it had exactly zip to do with his job and was in no way shape or form hypocritical.

Now when politicians start using taxpayer dollars to make visits to their mistress, or they are pressing legislation to tell others how they can live their private lives while they are screwing around, or they are selling out their country for sex, they you have a scandal. What passes for scandal in the US is laughed at by other countries as puritanically hypocritical, and rightly so.

68. So your biggest problem was he had an affair with a "man"???
Politicians appoint people to positions for a variety of reasons, and rarely do those have anything to due with qualifications, and many times those people include wives, relatives, polical contributors, friends, and even sometimes lovers. That was the basis that his enemies used to attack McGreevey, but if qualifications are the gold (and only) standard of political appointees, the vast majority of them would be out of a job tomorrow. The main reason McGreevey was so "scandalous" was because he was gay, which is also more than a bit hypocritical give that there are almost certainly several closeted gay GOP members of congress.

78. Then you missed the point completely
If McGreevey does qualify as a "sex scandal" it was less so than Dan Burton(R), John McCain(R), Arnold Schwarzenegger(R), Jeb Bush(R), Bob Barr(R), Philip Giordano(R), and probably quite a few others I'm missing. You keep wanting make this solely about McGreevey for whatever reason, but it's about the objectivity of the posted list which I clearly stated from the beginning.

83. Philip Giordano(R) was molesting an 8 and a 10 yr old girl, but you're right
McGreevy deserved to make the list and he didn't. I mean after all, sex between two men is far more scandalous than child rape.

Dan Burton(R) was the poster child for the Christian Coalition even though he was described as the "biggest skirt chaser" in the Indiana legislature by his colleagues and fathered a child out of wedlock, but you're right. He doesn't deserve to be on the list and McGreevey does.

John McCain(R) screwed everything for years and finally dumped his disabled wife and mother of his children for the rich socialite he was having an affair with, but you're right...he has no business on the list like McGreevey does.

Arnold Schwarzenegger(R) sexually assaulted at least one woman, and probably more, but you're right...criminal sexual assault is nothing compared to gay butt-sex.

Right. Got it. What universe was that again? Nevermind.

Cheers!

66. Hardly
Edwards might have said "family values" were important and there's nothing inherently wrong with that. He never maintained that the "traditional" family should consist of a father, mother, and children in the same household. "Family values" is conservative double talk for support of a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and the DOM Act. Edwards supported neither and was staunchly against both. Edwards also strongly supported anti-poverty legislation that was and still is important to single parent households. So while Edwards may not have been able to stay faithful to his wife, he did support issues that are actually relevant to "family values", and not the conservative speak double talk duplicitous version of the phrase.

75. This was not his main issue of campaigning
He was talking health care; he was talking poverty. And, yes, he had his family with him.

But he never campaigned, not in 2004 and not in 2008 about "family values" and defining such values according to him. And he certainly never received any award from the "committee on family value" (or something).

He did not bash gays. Like most American men, especially from the south, he was honest in expressing him being uncomfortable around gay men. He did admit, however, that he has some "growing up" to do about this topic.

He opposed gay marriage, as did Obama and most Democratic leaders. At least, the ones with serious aspirations.

I am not going to shout like you, but I will dare you to point to example of Edwards "bashing gays." Except for the two items that I raised which no one would consider "bashing."

79. Exactly, but there's a serious difference that needs to be noted
A high percentage of the public at large are unfaithful to their spouses. I don't really expect politicians to be much different. I could really care less who politicians are porking, and that goes for Mark Sanford and John Ensign. The problem comes in when you make "family values" the cornerstone of your party, and you try to use that claimed moral high ground to discriminate against others.

36. Mike Duvall Resigns From State Assembly - OC Weekly's Scott Moxley
Duvall--vice chairman of the powerful Committee on Utilities & Commerce--trotted onto the state Assembly floor this morning with his game face on. It was the look of a man trying to hide the obvious puffiness under his eyes. When he reached his desk near the front of the room, he plopped his body down hard in the chair, sighed and stole a glance at the press section to his right. It must have been unsettling to see both myself and KCBS reporter Dave Lopez standing there for a second day. I could imagine he was wondering: what's next?

Well, less than five minutes later, Orange County Republican Party Chairman Scott Baugh told me in a telephone interview that Duvall, a fellow OC Republican, should consider resigning from the state Assembly. Within hours, Duvall did just that.

"There's nothing defensible in what I saw or heard," Baugh said about the airing of video capturing Duvall graphically boast to a colleague during a public committee hearing about his sexual conquests with lobbyists. The key memorable line from the boasting was his gleeful observation that one of the lobbyists had complained that the assemblyman was "dripping out" of her when she walked up stairs after a sexual interlude.

Before news broke of the resignation, which was apparently contained in a letter, multiple sources in the Capitol had said Duvall was telling colleagues that his relationships are private matters and that they should ignore the media while he rides out the public relations nightmare. "He wants us to ignore it," one Orange County elected official told me this morning on condition of anonymity. "But I don't think that is possible at this point. He's screwed himself."

One pending irony: Duvall sat on the Assembly rules committee which usually handles allegations of member wrongdoing.

it's one of the biggest hypocrisies seen around the World. We have no problem invading, stealing, killing, all for business interests, but having sex with someone other than your wife or husband, and OMG! It's crazy.

I am not defending this man... he deserves what he gets for preaching about this very thing. But this country really needs to get its priorities in order with a little bit of common sense.

46. Gives new meaning to "Status: Active"
Whoever said ewwwwww about her drippity-drips, I can only echo it a hundred times. Ewwww indeed!

But--this has been kind of a distraction from the health insurance reform discussions...

Back to anxiously awaiting the President's speech before the joint session. So sorry I can't watch it on Fox. :eyes:

49. This story was on KCBS local last night. This jackass is a "pro-family" jackass hypocrite.
The local KCBS reporter chased him around with a camera all day long.

What about sleeping with people who have bussiness before his comittee. This appears to be a case of Pay to Play, or would that be Play to play?

55. The best part of this was watching the CBS2 reporter chasing
him all over the state capitol all day.
He kept ducking in and out of places where the media isn't allowed to hide.
The story is priceless if you haven't seen it.

58. But notice this...
“I am deeply saddened that my inappropriate comments have become a major distraction for my colleagues in the Assembly".....

Not that the bastard actually did this stuff or opened his unusually larger yapper about it. But that it's become a distraction. Yes, people get distracted by this sort of freakishness.

Crash and burn, dickhead. They'll be plenty more where you came from.
