Patrick Swayze Dead at 57
Source: AP

LOS ANGELES — Patrick Swayze, the hunky actor who danced his way into viewers' hearts with "Dirty Dancing" and then broke them with "Ghost," died Monday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57.

"Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months," said a statement released Monday evening by his publicist, Annett Wolf. No other details were given.

Fans of the actor were saddened to learn in March 2008 that Swayze was suffering from a particularly deadly form of cancer.

He had kept working despite the diagnosis, putting together a memoir with his wife and shooting "The Beast," an A&E drama series for which he had already made the pilot. It drew a respectable 1.3 million viewers when the 13 episodes ran in 2009, but A&E said it had reluctantly decided not to renew it for a second season.

Swayze said he opted not to use painkilling drugs while making "The Beast" because they would have taken the edge off his performance. He acknowledged that time might be running out given the grim nature of the disease.

72. (near end of Too Wong Foo) Carol Ann (Stockard Channing) to Vida (Patrick Swayze)
Vida Boheme: Carol Ann, if we're going to be friends, there really is something I should tell you...
Carol Ann: Adam's Apple?
Vida Boheme: What?
Carol Ann: Adam's Apple. Women don't have Adam's Apples, only men have Adam's Apples. The first night that you came to town I noticed that you had yourself an Adam's Apple.
Vida Boheme: Then, then you know?
Carol Ann: I know, that I am very fortunate to have a lady friend who just happens to have an Adam's Apple.

Carol Ann: I love you Ms. Vida Boheme!
Vida Boheme: I've waited my whole life to hear those words said to that name. And I'm very, very, very happy that you're the one to say them. (Vida departs and heads back to car)

Carol Ann: (yells) Vida! I don't think of you as a man... and I don't think of you as a woman

Carol Ann: I think of you as an angel!

Vida Boheme: I think that's Healthy!

80. When I was misdiagnosed with a terminal illness, my first thought was ...
....'Well, I guess I don't have to worry about quitting smoking now.'

If the same thing were to happen now, I don't know if I would start smoking again or not. Probably not, due to the misdiagnosis before, but absent that experience I might well. When they don't pussyfoot around, when they say, "You have this and you are going to be dead in no more than X years." they usually mean it.

In a state where manliness is judged on the football field-he proved he was tougher because he could do something harder......dance. He was much loved and respected. 45. "a particularly deadly... cancer" Pancreatic cancer just ended my brother's life too soon...
My heart goes out to the family of this good actor and decent man. May they find some solace in the well wishes of his legion of fans.

75. Wow. This was very recent.
Do you have much contact to your niece and nephew (at the bottom of the article)?

The photo and the article put a strong human face on your tragic loss.

A very close friend of mine died of brain cancer before turning 50. It's too sad when the good ones are taken from us.

of your friend. This was,is, particularly hard on our mother who had lost a child (long ago) already. Some hurts never really go away, and this brought it all up again for her...

I actually liked this movie... even tough it had two of the worst actors of all time, Keanu Reeves AND Gary Busey.

And of course Anthony Kiedis (Red Hot Chilli Peppers) as Tone.

RIP.

FYI, she had smoked since she was probably 14 or so and that is undoubtedly what caused this disease.

92. It's a terrible diagnosis.
My mother's birthday was about 3 weeks ago. The 3 year DOD anniversary is coming up next month. Then, like 3 months after she passed, one of her best friend's bladder cancer, which had been in remission, came back with a vengeance and took her too at 58. Then my step father's mother contracted it and then his niece got leukemia in her teens so we're watching that unfold now. As an RN, I have seen more people die than I can remember. As such, I now try to live every day as if it were my last (to the extent possible). We all die in the end so enjoy your stay while your here.

I have a friend who's a big deal in the Arab horse world. I'd gone with her to one of their big shows in Lexington. Patrick was there, with Lisa, standing around watching like everyone else.
