LA Times, Washington Post breaking up news service
Source: Associated Press

The Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post are breaking up their news service after 47 years, making it the latest casualty of the media upheaval driven by the array of alternative information and entertainment sources on the Internet.

The divorce announced Wednesday takes effect Jan. 1. Beginning then, the Los Angeles Times will distribute some of its best work through a news service jointly owned by newspaper publishers McClatchy Co. and the Tribune Co., the Times' owner.

... Executives from the Times and the Post said they mutually agreed it was time to dissolve their marriage, although they didn't elaborate on the reasons for the decision.

But Washington Post Co. Chairman Bo Jones hinted the Internet played a role in the break up.

1. Hard to summon regret for these propaganda outlets.
Maybe the dissolution will make their efforts to spike the news a little harder.

4. It WAS a great newspaper ~ everyone I know would read it
everyday.

Now, most of my friends dont take the LA Times.

They called my cousin the other day and begged him to take the Times for 50 cents a week. He said no, he didn't have TIME for the TIMES.

In the stores the stack is always full.

5. Lately, it's just been appalling

Beyond the conflict of interest fiasco with Brownstein and its editorialists the spin and outright lies coming from that paper these days rivals the Post. It's been all downhill since the Chandler's sold it- and in the past six months, its gotten even worse. It'll be good riddance when that one finally tanks.

7. I know. I used to drive three miles down the road every day to pick it up.
Once it was sold to the Tribune and they started replacing the real news writers on the editorial page with neo-con hacks out of the Heritage Foundation, I stopped buying and reading it.

6. I bet it has something to do with the soon to be unveiled effort by
many major papers to restrict access to their content. Just a guess. Perhaps one of them is onboard and the other isn't.
