GOP Leader (McConnell) Tight-Lipped on Ensign
Source: Washington Post

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) repeatedly refused to answer questions Friday about a New York Times report that embattled Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) negotiated a cover-up of his extramarital affair with a campaign staffer, with his friend Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) serving as a financial intermediary.

At a Friday morning news conference, McConnell faced a barrage of questions from reporters about the Times's 4,000-word front-page investigation suggesting that Ensign may have improperly used his office to aid his mistress and her husband, who had been one of Ensign's top Washington staffers. Asked if Ensign could still be effective, McConnell said, "Sen. Ensign continues to serve," and said he does not have "any observations to make about the Ensign matter."

Spokesmen for Ensign and Coburn did not immediately respond to requests for comment Friday.

GOP aides say probes to decide Ensign fate

Senior Republican aides say Sen. John Ensign’s (R-Nev.) political future will depend on what actions the Senate Ethics Committee or the Justice Department may take against the lawmaker.

A senior GOP aide said that if the Senate Ethics Committee was not already investigating Ensign, it would be certain to launch a probe now.

The aide said that Ensign would have to answer the new allegations himself.

4. He's so hot they're scared to associate themselves with him
This very well could be interesting before it's over. My hopes are it sullies Coburn before it goes away.

9. They don't want to appear to support him
But they're afraid to come out and vocally oppose him for fear of the outburst it will provoke from the riff raff. Goaded by their radio leaders.

When you think about it this is what's driving the entire repub party anymore. They are petrified of being crucified by A bunch of radio DJ's so they just opt to do nothing.
