Official's body found hanging from Tijuana bridge

TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) -- The mutilated body of a state official who authorities said was suspected of giving fake driver's licenses to drug gang members was found hanging from a bridge Friday in the Mexican border city of Tijuana.

Relatives identified the man as Rogelio Sanchez, a Baja California state official in charge of driver's licenses, said Prisma Perez, a spokeswoman for the state Attorney General's Office. Sanchez, 44, was kidnapped Wednesday as he left his home in Tijuana.

"The investigation indicates he had been giving licenses to organized crime," Perez said.

His body was found hanging from the Morelio bridge at 5:30 a.m. in an industrial zone of Tijuana, just as factory workers were beginning to arrive for work.

5. We don't know that this was "right wing justice."
Could have been a rival gang. Could have been a botched sting. All we know is that it was an ugly murder of a possibly (but not certainly) corrupt official.

6. Regardless, it's more proof of the failure of the "war on drugs."

If we were to decriminalize, legalize, regulate and tax marijuana, and use that revenue on education and health care, the possibility for this form of corruption would be greatly reduced. It will never completely go away, but we can take a serious bite out of it by treating marijuana and hemp the way we treat vodka/tequila and medicinal/industrial alcohol, respectively...

8. Agree -- and it would give us a chance to get rid of some of the corurption of police . . .
and high government officials.

Americans have to begin to reflect on the violence Mexico is suffering now and
whether we really want to continue this insanity we call the Drug War!!

We should legalize drugs --

7. What I'm trying to point out . . . obviously badly . . .
is that we really don't know anything for sure --

but the news that reaches the public is about violence to frighten them --

over and again.

9. More than 5,000 prohibition-related killings in Mexico this year.
September was the bloodiest month yet, with more than 700 killed.

Wow, I think more people are dying in Mexico's drug war than in either Iraq or Afghanistan. Of course, we're involved, too. Our government is giving Mexico $1.4 billion over the next three years for more better cops, soldiers, and equipment.
