William Jefferson can remain free during his appeal, federal judge rules

William Jefferson can remain free pending his appeal of the guilty verdict on 11 corruption counts that came after an eight-week trial in August, U.S. District Court Judge T.S. Ellis III ruled today.

An appeal could last a year or more.

Ellis' ruling, which was unexpected, came five days after he sentenced Jefferson to 13 years in prison, the longest term ever for a corruption case involving a member of Congress.
