Romney says Democratic convention should move out of FleetCenter
Edited on Tue Mar-16-04 04:36 PM by MaineDem
BOSTON -- Republican Gov. Mitt Romney said Tuesday that the Democratic party should move its convention from the FleetCenter to a new convention center in South Boston, but convention leaders say they're staying put.

The FleetCenter poses significant security concerns because it's on top of a train station, across the street from a subway stop and is adjacent to several major roadways. The new $600 million waterfront convention center is located south of downtown Boston in the Seaport District and is scheduled to host its first event in June.

"It would clearly be easier if this convention were being held in the new convention center," Romney said. "But it's not my choice. It's the choice of the Democratic National Committee. They have made their choice and we're going to support them in the choice they've made."

The Secret Service is in charge of security for the convention, because it has been designated a "special security event." Romney said he has not seen the security plans.

1. Sounds like a threat
"But it's not my choice. It's the choice of the Democratic National Committee. They have made their choice ...."

Doesn't that sound like a threat?

7. "That's a beautiful convention you're planning, there, Mr. Kerry.
It would be a shame if anything were to happen to it ..."

2. Hey a$$hole, if Shrub is a good leader, we're all safe anywhere right?
I hope Romney has an event similar to something O+A broadcast one April 1st.

4. Oh please
If they had planned to hold the convention in southie, Romney would have told them to move to Fleet because the new one is too close to the waterfront and... terra... boat attack... plane...

It's nonsense. Romney is just trying to stir shit up.

8. How in the world did a liberal bastion like Mass
end up electing a Mormon Republican for governor?

17. The story didn't play in Mass
For some reason all the media really did believe he saved the Olympics. Mass is funny. We(not me) elect alot of Republican governors but they can't do much in getting elected to much more of anything else. Former Governor Weld had a 60-65% approval rating, ran against Kerry, and got clobered. Go figure.

24. rural areas
The governorship is the only arena in which the more conservative residents of rural MA can challenge the authority of Boston.

9. If there was a Terra attack against the Democratic convention
What would be the political consequences????

Would the Chimp be blamed for not protecting the Dems???

Would the Chimp/Romney/GOP say - "I told you so"????

12. I would suggest that our VP nominee and Kerry never be together
during the convention nor on the campaign trail because the goddamn son of a bitch republicans would try (if they both were killed) to say that "the law reads, blah, blah, and thus the Democrats are too late to put up a candidate---George wins". You might think I'm a bit daffy but I've seen to much of those bastards in action. Remember how they tried to stop Mondale after Paul got killed???? They believe in ballots with only one name on them.

Hey, I some space in my garage for the convention. No trains, planes, or automobiles. But seriously, the Boston police are threatening to strike so like it really matters where they hold it?

18. KamaAina says Repuke convention should move from Garden
That's right, folks. The Repukkke convention is slated for Madison Square Garden, not the far more secure Javits Center, three long blocks west along the Hudson River.

The Garden sits directly atop the main Amtrak station as well as that for the Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit, whereas North Station (underneath the FleetCenter) serves only half of Boston's commuter lines, plus the new Amtrak line to Maine (nearly all Amtrak service to Boston is across town at outh Station).

But you don't hear Pataki saying boo about that, do you?

Do you?

to Saudi Arabia.

I still can't believe the Repukes are having it in NYC - thanks to Bloomberg and Pataki - a-holes.

22. Sorry, but Rethugs don't get to tell the Dems where to meet.
But maybe the policy should be changed: also let the Dems tell Dubya and the GOP where to go. ;-)
