Volcano erupts on Caribbean island
Friday, 12 February 2010

A volcano on the tiny Caribbean island of Montserrat has shot a plume of ash an estimated nine miles into the sky, one of its most dramatic events since a devastating 1997 eruption that drove away half the population.

The partial collapse of the dome over the volcano's crater also unleashed flows of hot gas and rocks, triggering sirens for the evacuation of about 20 people from a nearby village.

Paul Cole, director of the Montserrat Volcano Observatory, said it appeared to be the most material shed by the volcano in about four years.

The dome has crumbled several times since the volcano became active in 1995, and Mr Cole said it is possible that activity would settle down now as the dome builds itself up again.... MORE

Mother Nature sure has had her way with us lately. I wonder what else she has in store.

4. I'm afraid to ask.
She might give me the answer in a very personal way. When Mother Nature is on the warpath, I just cringe in fear and beg her not to let it hurt too bad. I understand She's gotta do what She's gotta do, but I really wish I could get out of her path while She does it. :scared:

5. Spent 6 weeks there 2 years in a row...
Was there working in the early 90's-- nice Island, not too rich but not real poor like so many other islands down there. Then, I think in like '95 Hurricane Hugo or something flattened it big time. Then, like the next year or so later, the long dormant VOLCANO, ( I peered down it years before) BLEW UP IN A BIG, BIG WAY!!! Like half of the island was gone and most of what was left was 'The Forbidden Zone" Only the smallest sliver was left inhabitable... All the good bits ( capital city, (town) the airport like all the buildings were gone, see ya... gone baby gone... Too bad, it was a cool little place with just enough people and seemingly just enough jobs to go around. Again, I have been to lot's of islands down there and most of the others are horribly poor or dangerous or......

I guess what was left also just went bye bye... Too bad

6. Damn I was just going to mix my new album there and the f**king island blows up again!!
OK not really. But a long time ago when I visited Air Studios Oxford the manager, whose name escapes me now, tried to sell me on Air Montserrat. I was quite sheepish in not letting him know that American record companies were not spending that type of money anymore. This was just around the time of "The Knack".

This man was the tape op who, in the absence of Max Norman, pushed the record button, which he was not allowed to do, on the first take of "Strawberry Fields Forever". He had a choice. Lose his job or DO WHAT JOHN LENNON TOLD HIM TO DO.

I found this out years after I met him. Pity I can't remember his name now. Nice man.
