LA approves Arizona boycott over immigration law

By CHRISTINA HOAG
Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Los Angeles on Wednesday became the largest city yet to boycott Arizona over its tough new law targeting illegal immigration in a move that likely will affect some $8 million in contracts with the state.

The City Council voted 13-1 to bar Los Angeles from conducting business with Arizona unless the law is repealed. The vote followed an emotional council discussion during which many members noted that their ancestors were U.S. immigrants.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa already has said he would approve the boycott.

The proposal could affect investments and contracts worth as much as $52 million, including contracts for airport, harbor and trucking services, according to a report from the city's chief legislative analyst. That report recommends the council consider suspending travel, cutting contracts and refraining from making any new ones with Arizona-based companies.

1. They better hope AZ doesn't retaliate
one or two days without Arizona-generated power and the mayor will have mobs storming his office.

7. And
AZ lose more money? Yea right. This banning Culture Studies in Tucson is over top. It does not portray teachings against whites, just tells the truth. These FMs are paranoid racist using fearmongering which is the most dangerous type hate against a race, religion, etc.

Even the Right Wingers, Tea Bagging GOPs don't want their convention in AZ for 2012.

5. Prop H8 anyone?
Why isn't there still an ongoing Boycott of anything to do with CA. They still haven't done anything about Prop 8. Oh, that's right. No one cares about Gay issues. :sarcasm:

16. I would have supported a CA boycott after H8
had one been called by the CA gay community. Still would.

21. You can...
just get a bunch of desperate people from Eastern Europe over here illegally who will work long hours in horrible conditions for little pay, which is still better than back home, and presto! Maybe it will help those people of color they serve, or anyone else for that matter, realize that illegal immigration is all about cheap labor and it sucks to have a group of second class citizens that is here to serve the corporatacracy.

There's a reason you don't see whites, blacks, Asians, or legal Hispanics doing those dangerous, inconvenient, horribly paid jobs with no labor standards in places with lots of illegal immigrants. It's because they have higher expectations. And because they can't compete with illegal immigrants, whom corporations can exploit. It's a veritable race to the bottom.

12. Yaaaa!! First of all.....go to the source! Hold their employers accountable.
Time to fight for equal rights for ALL Americans. Not just the white ones. Where immigration is concerned we need education and rational decision making, not racist imperialism and ignorance. Many immigrants, if not all, helped to build this country.

The employers of these undocumented aliens should be held accountable and fined huge fines for instigating the whole thing. If your family was suffering, you'd take advantage of the opportunity to work, too, if it came your way. Wake up!

14. Teabaggers Wished They Had Rallies Like This!
The amazing thing is the degree to which the corporate media inflates astroturf events like the teabaggers, but ignores events like the present rally:

18. Thanks. Yes, that was huge. We had a huge one here in San Jose, too.
The thing about these demonstrations is that Mexican people are more culturally used to hitting the streets than most north Americans. Maybe some of that will rub off. :)
