San Jose Mercury NewsAfter dozens of San Jose residents supported or opposed an Arizona law for rounding up illegal immigrants, often breaking for loud applause or booing, the City Council approved Tuesday a symbolic measure that condemns its neighboring state, rather than a harsher economic boycott.
"I do believe the legislation is unconstitutional," Mayor Chuck Reed said of the Arizona law, "but I'm not going to be supportive of a boycott."
Council members agreed, voting 9-2 for a measure that includes a denunciation of the Arizona law, a prohibition on business trips by city employees to the state and support for legal challenges filed by other individuals or groups. Council members Pete Constant and Pierluigi Oliverio voted against the measure.
"Given the economic situation facing the city, I don't think a boycott is appropriate right now," said Madison Nguyen, the councilwoman who sponsored the resolution.
