Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden releases statement to the American people

NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) -- Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden released an audio statement to the American people on Monday.

The audio tape, obtained by BNO News, showed a still photo of Bin Laden while he speaks in the background.

"A message from Sheikh Osama bin Laden - may Allah protect him - to the American people," a statement from al-Qaeda's media wing read. The tape was titled "Progress."

Because the contents of the tape itself were completely in Arabic, BNO News was not immediately able to translate it.

I question any video reported to be from Osama bin Laden that is not translated. Even if it 'was' a new video, to show it and claim there is no translation is suspicious - I cannot believe any respectable agency would release it untranslated and expect us to believe no one in the government can translate the message. I think (perhaps halfheartedly), since most Americans do not speak Arabic, that it helps create a sense of mystery/danger/terror to play these messages in Arabic to the American people. Already bombarded with half-truths and double-talk, people hear these 'untranslatable' messages and just assume they are threatening.

As for releasing new video, far as I can tell, not releasing video hasn't done him or his reputation any harm among those that matter to him. It also gives anyone in pursuit nothing to work with. And maybe his appearance has changed so he can move about more easily.

Thing is, no facts about the situation line up to support the notion that he is dead. Reports of his death are just groundless speculation.
