June 17, 2010

CANTON — Nearly 24 years after Amy Bishop fired a 12-gauge shotgun into the chest of her 18-year-old brother, a grand jury indicted her yesterday on a charge of first-degree murder.

The indictment in the 1986 slaying, which authorities had originally declared an accident, was handed up four months after the 45-year-old college professor went on a shooting rampage at the University of Alabama Huntsville, killing three colleagues and injuring three others.

Norfolk District Attorney William R. Keating, announcing the indictment during a press conference, said law enforcement authorities in Massachusetts failed decades ago.

“Jobs weren’t done, responsibilities weren’t met, justice wasn’t served,’’ Keating said.

5. Your welcome, although
if it HAD been a bishop, it would have given a whole new meaning to "Murder In The Cathedral".

4. I hope the Alabama prosecution taken precedence
After all, they have the death penalty, while Massachusetts does not.

6. Alabama has physical custody, I don't imagine they'll give her up until they've tried her
and it's a stronger case, they caught her redhanded. The Mass case will be much more difficult to prove, for a lot of reasons, most notably the time elapsed. That said, I doubt she'll get the DP. She's white, female, middle class, and those types of people rarely end up on Death Row. Plus, there's at least a smidgeon of doubt about her sanity-probably not enough to make a difference in the trial phase, but the penalty phase is a whole different ball game.

Disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer.

7. Wtf? Are they afraid to try her for the mass killing? Did she have some motive that would
embarass some VIP? 24 years is a long time to wait to make up your mind about something that was common knowledge. Even though there is no statute of limitation on murder this sets a dangerous precident. Don't like someone? Charge them with some crime they committed a gazillion years ago.

I say that the mass murder trial should come first. They can add the second one if the sentence is not long enough.

8. Do you know who I am?
Yes, Amy, we know exactly who you are.
You are a woman who got away with fratricide . . . for a while.
