US asks UNSC to authorise multinational force in Liberia

United Nations, July 31
The United States has asked the Security Council to authorise immediate deployment of a multinational force with robust mandate to bring peace and enable humanitarian aid to be delivered in war-torn Liberia.
The multinational force would be replaced by the UN peacekeepers by October 1 under the American proposal.
With the international community facing criticism from human rights groups across the world for inaction in Liberia, Washington introduced a resolution in the 15-member Council on Wednesday which also include a controversial provision that would exempt peacekeepers from prosecution in the International Criminal Court (ICC) that Washington has consistently opposed.
At a news conference, Secretary General Kofi Annan said that there is no need for such a provision as UN peacekeepers are never known to have indulged in mass crimes which would attract prosecution by the ICC. (snip/...)
