"Ohio Republican Party Headquarters,Columbus...unseen vandal scrawled the word "LIES"...Republican Party Chairman Bob Bennett, who is grappling with a series of recent allegations against GOP officeholders, issued a statement condemning the act:"The paint can be cleaned up,but these offenses leave behind a damaging stain on our political discourse and mutual respect for opposing points of view."Dan travas,a spokesman for the Ohio Democratic Party, said his party doesn't condone illegal activity and "we're sorry it happened" " http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/news/1080297275193370.xml

:chuckle:...name of politics.

But seriously - people shouldn't be doing things like this - we aren't Republicans after all.

"No one has ever seen a Republican mass meeting that was devoid of the perception of the ludicrous." - Mark Twain

"My kind of loyalty was loyalty to one's country, not to its institutions or its office-holders. The country is the real thing, the substantial thing, the eternal thing; it is the thing to watch over, and care for, and be loyal to; institutions are extraneous, they are mere clothing, and clothing can wear out, become ragged, cease to be comfortable, cease to protect the body from winter, disease, and death." - Mark Twain

"Our Congresses consist of Christians. In their private life they are true to every obligation of honor; yet in every session they violate them all, and do it without shame. Because honor to party is above honor to themselves." - Mark Twain (yes, again)

5. Heck, here in St Pete, FL Vandals destroyed a Kerry sign.
It was a large sign placed out in front of the Democratic Headquarters and had been specially made by a volunteer for the local Democratic Party. Of course, it never made the papers, just the local newsletter for our party.

But I do like this one from the Democratic guy:

Yeah, liars, it happened. So sorry. Now let's move on! B-)

8. Ah, the old "mutual respect" fallacy
If the Repubs had shown just a tad of mutual respect in the last two decades, this wouldn't happen. Their idea of mutual respect is when they kick the Dems, and the Dems stay silent. Now that we are starting to play their game, they want mutual respect.

Here's another overused phrase: You reap what you sow. Or as was said in the Great White Hype-- Close cover before striking.

And for the gratuitous disclaimer, I in no way condone the destruction of property no matter how despicable the pigs who own the property may be, and no matter how appropriate the vandalism is.

35. "No matter how appropriate tthe vandalism is"
Unfortunately, some itches shouldn't be scratched.

This is a wonderful p.r. opportunity for the GOP, which, after years of rhetorical and legal vandalism, can now puff itself up with a lot of false concern about democracy, tolerance, liberty, open debate, etc., and reap undeserved sympathy while people are distracted from the issues.

No undecided is going to say, "Oh, look, someone snuck in under cover of darkness and then snuck off, leaving this mark of blazing truth! I'll vote for the Democrats!"

They're going to think, "What assholes."

44. It's an unpredictable weapon
Many will say "How despicable!" Others will say "Gee, the Republicans sure are out of favor these days, and for good reason." Who knows the ultimate effect? I think either way it will only heighten whatever the public sentiment is leaning towards anyway.

One of the first great acts of rebellion of our nation was an act of vandalism. It worked out okay.

But to correct my ambiguous statement from the previous post-- I meant more to say no matter how appropriate the message of the vandalism is, but was too tired of typing to use longhand, I guess.

47. To be called an asshole
I can accept - if the trade-off is that 1 out of 10 people look at that grafitti and have a serious moment of "hmmm..."

People are afraid to disagree or dissent. Someone has to do it for those who don't know how.

"undeserved sympathy"? c'mon, its paint on a wall, and will be painted over. And probably by an immigrant laborer, at that. If its the price of repairing the damage, I don't think the GOP is not going to be able to make one less phone call, print one less flyer, or air one more advertisment because of it.

9. I can condone this
Has anyone ever seen a popular movement for change that did NOT involve paint on walls?

Some haven't the voice to be heard. But they have paint with which they might be seen.

This isn't planting bombs, or stealing files. This is freedom of expression. An illegal one which violates private property, to be sure. But I think sometimes these things must be weighed in the balance.

We've got a hell of alot more to be worried about than ::gasp!:: grafitti.

Besides, whoever it was wrote the Truth about the Lies. And Truth is hard to find lately. If it takes a can of spraypaint to find it, I'm not going to bitch too much.

46. You've got a point, and we aren't talking about some nonsense sex scandal
We are talking about the invasion of a nation at peace, the murder of 100,000 people at least, and the abuse of those Americans who were willing to put their lives on the line for our nation. And we are talking about a media that has covered for the principle perpetrators of these crimes, thus making it difficult to accuse the criminals of their crimes.

It must all be weighed in the balance. Too many people, even Bush opponents, seem to feel that 100,000 dead people, with a greater number of grieving friends and relatives, is a small matter which should not ruffle our feathers or cause us to lose decorum. Their crime is far worse than that of the vandals, in this case.

20. What, precisely, is more productive about a sign?
Other than the fact that you can carry it around with you?

What would you suggest would be another way to make that point? To put a post on a message board? Send an email?

I think the action stands on its own merit. It cannot be summarily ignored. One looks on the building and there it is. One cannot change the channel on it. Its obviously not supposed to be there, but there it is all the same. Someone must have felt strongly not only to have bothered, but to have taken the personal risk involved in vandalising private property.

I think its extremely productive. I'd like to see more.

Remember "Kilroy was Here" and the morale impact that had on Allied soldiers during WWII.

I hope to see "LIES" popping up all over this country.

27. I would certainly be supportive of creative means of expression,...
,...as opposed to illegal means of expression. Nowadays, everytime I go to the bookstore, I always have a pocket full of post-it notes reading "FULL OF TERROR" or "IT'S MORE LIES" or "BEWARE" to attach to right-wingers' books. My point is made and no damage to property is done. It's fun, too *LOL*!!!

There are a thousand and one different ways to get the message out without resorting to breaking laws. I would hate to see this country deteriote into another round of even more highly charged civil instability. But, if it happens,...I am like you tom_paine,...I will be not sympathetic to the extreme right-wingers who are fundamentally responsible for being the dividers. Screw 'em!!!

And aren't they ragging us?

The way I see it, is the GOP has a big fucking can of paint, its called Fox. They've also been known to use other brands on occasion when painting one of their really big murals. And typically painting OVER and hiding the Truth.

Now THAT, my friend, is NOT cool.

If the GOP has anyone who feels passionate enough about his political party to paint something on the walls of the Dem HQ, more power to him.

Its that sort of "fuckit" attitude that made this country different. If we lose that edge and settle into obedient conformity, then we've already lost.

P.S. I respect your opinion, I just disagree.

62. I'd like to see...
men in Bush masks...wearing pink slips.

A bit of populist street theatre.

It's a double entendre, also.

during gop cheerleading sessions? during job lay-offs? for fun?

The weather is getting warmer...heheheheh

:D

63. Free Interior Decoration... reThugs complain about donations?
Someone goes to all the effort of donating paint and talent for a free interior redesign of a reThug HQ, and the party brass can only bitch about it.

How ungrateful.

then it didn't,now it is...clicked on http://www.dispatch/indexes/newsindex.php scrolled down to Central Ohio News to box with videos from WBNS-10TV,clicked on "Vandals hit Rep.hq's",goes to window "video clips",click on story on bottom left-"vandals hit...",and it came on for me in a bit.Shows spray-painted columns, door trim, under windows...I'm sure there's a way they'll get tax money to fix it up.
