Polish prime minister says he will resign
WARSAW, Poland -- Prime Minister Leszek Miller said Friday that he will resign on May 2, the day after Poland joins the European Union, citing his government's dismal approval ratings.

Miller made the announcement after talks with Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski.

Earlier Friday, nearly 30 lawmakers defected from Miller's Democratic Left Alliance party and called for him to resign.

The defections reflected deep dissatisfaction in the party with Miller just before Poland - a key U.S. ally in Iraq - joins the European Union on May 1

7. hmm
Not that easy; Miller's government is very unpopular, while President Kwasniewski is still quite popular - both belong to the same (left/post communistic) party, the SLD.
Miller isolated Poland in the EU before even joining, this seems to be the main reason for the move. And Miller has trouble keeping together his faction, his party and his coalition - not a good position for a PM.

6. Solidarity would be no better.
I hope that the DLA can be reformed to become a progressive force that supports a sovereign, independent Poland that will cowtow to no one.

8. Didn't a Polish politician say the other day Poland was hoodwinked
Into supporting the Iraq invasion. Then he added that he didn't really mind, as Saddam was a dictator. It may have been the President, Aleksander Kwasniewski, though.
