Canadian jets intercept Russian bombers
Source: IANS

Toronto: In yet another incident reminiscent of the Cold War, Canada on Friday revealed that two Russian bombers were intercepted trying to enter its airspace.

Defence officials in Ottawa said that two Canadian CF-18 fighter jets had confrontation with two Russian TU-95 Bears when they flew into their "area of interest" off the coast of Newfoundland on Wednesday.

The officials said the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) - which is jointly manned by the Americans and Canadians from its headquarters in Colorado - spotted the Russian fighters and despatched two Canadian fighters to intercept them.

"This incident demonstrates why it is vitally important for the Canadian Armed Forces to have the best technology and equipment available. This is true whether we are asserting our Arctic sovereignty, fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan or aiding reconstruction efforts in Haiti," the ruling Conservative Party was quoted as saying.

6. You mean the B 52?
I wouldnt bet against the TU 95 and their crews ability to deliver payload any more than I would bet against the B 52.

28. You can see them coming from across the globe.
No need to spend trillions more developing new weapon systems when we're already a couple generations ahead of them, and everybody else is using our systems we export.

9. Well, you don't prepare to fight the weakest of your enemies, do you?
We should be preparing to fight the most advanced militaries in the world. THAT'S how you have good national defence.

4. Over Newfoundland??
Wow, so Russians can fly to North America without going over Alaska. Almost like the Earth is spherical or something. Somebody let Sarah Palin know that Putin reared his head and she missed it.

That said, I guess they can't really point fingers at russia just for that.

The aircrew that serve in them all end up deaf. Even with ear plugs on, the engines is incredibly loud.

14. Russia pretty much does this all of the time.
They'll send those TU-95's out and drag them along another country's territory, but never actually go in. They did it often in the Cold War, and never quite stopped doing it.

15. Ah... The good old days..

It almost makes one wax nostalgic.

Throw in a few "fishing trawlers" and it's like the 1970s all over again.

The Soviets were a lot more fun to play with than distributed networks of non-sovereign idealogues.

17. They were "intercepted" in international air space
It's like me telling my neighbor he can't stand on the public sidewalk outside my house. I would come off sounding like a crazy man, which is what Harper looks like to normal people.

pull yourself together Prime Minister. The Russians were just dumping Tony Hayward back in North America when they found out BP had had sneaked him across the border into Siberia. Sort of like your mascot Joe Arpaio down in Arizona. ;-)

20. how embarrassing for both sides.
The only threat these old relic bombers pose is that they might breakdown and crash on Canadian soil. And there's that idiot Harper indulging in nationalistic chest thumping over intercepting these grannies of the air.
