Casting Call for West Virginia GOP Ad Called for ''Hicky'' Actors
Source: CBS News

A casting call for a Republican West Virginia campaign ad called for actors with a "'Hicky' Blue Collar look."

The ad "Stop Obama," produced for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, features three men in plain clothes and trucker hats sitting at a diner, complaining about President Obama and West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin, the state's Democratic Senate candidate.

Manchin is locked in a tight race against Republican businessman John Raese. CBS News is calling the race a toss up.

According to material provided to CBS by a Democratic source, the ad was shot at the Oregon Diner in Philadelphia. A casting call for the ad reads, "We are going for a 'Hicky' Blue Collar look. These characters are from West Virginia so think coal miner/trucker looks."

The casting call also includes wardrobe suggestions such as jeans, work boots, flannel shirt, denim shirt, "Dickie's type jacket with t-shirt underneath," "John Deer hats (not brand new, preferably beat up)," and "Trucker hats (not brand new, preferably beat up)."

They're using the "hickey" guys here, too. It's just so "folksy", dontcha know? And, the people who think it's "cute" are too stupid to know that they're being insulted. Thank goodness for the MUTE button.

17. Raese owns the media here
Lock stock and barrel.

Love his commercial where he's walking around in a denim shirt. John "Trustfund" Raese has never worked a blue-collar day in his life. Now he's astroturfing commercials?

Dick Cheney's incest joke about West Virginia was a one day story, while Obama's "bitter" comments dominated the news for weeks.

11. Ad should be - "The Republicans mock you West Virginians! You're "hicky" to them & they think you
are fools. Making an ad for the Republican candidate for governor and asking for "Hicky" actors just speaks volumes about what they really feel about us".

14. If They Want True Realisim...
All they have to do is walk down the stretch known as Appalachia. Here they can find the realism they are looking for. People with a lack of dental care have voids where teeth should be. That would be great for those diners using straws! For the attire just about any family has it's share of hand me downs for that true wore look--denims past their prime, caps and hats full of hard labor grime, faces aged beyond their years.(this would save on makeup in the studio). While they are at it how about some footage of their living quarters. No condos here. The lean tos are owned or rrented by the lucky ones. The unlucky ones have to go from shelters to family to the back seat of their cars or trucks(if they have one). To the "Republicons" most of us are here to be used, abused or simply for their amusement and as one great queen once said "We are not amused".

20. Part of that is the coal industry
and the efforts to move towards more cleaner energy and coal definitely isn't on the list.

Add to that that West Virginia leans solidly into the "social conservative" category and add to that more than a bit of racism and a close race becomes a long haul.

18. John Deere
There's an "e" on the end. If that's a mistake of the article's author, it's one thing. But if the person who wrote the ad spelled it "Deer", it's pretty damn obvious he/she doesn't know anything about the class of person this intends to emulate. They're sure as hell not from rural West Virginia.

21. I'll tell you what the criticisim of that ad would be for me.

Not that they were looking for hicky looking people. I lve in WV and that idea is good. One of the reasons Obama is disliked is he's black, urban, well dressed and well educated. So picking actors that look opposite of Obama is good thinking.

Where they fucked up is when it gets out that the ad wasn't shot in WV. If they are going to spend wads of cash trying to influence a state's election then we here in WV should be hired for the commercials and stuff too. Instead they oursourced them to the yankees ;-)

since West Virginia broke away from Virginia to join the "yankees", way back in 1863. Maybe things have changed since then?

27. There is nothing West Virginians hate more than being stereotyped in this way.
The only West Virginians who wouldn't be insulted by this will be voting for Raese anyway.

Joe Manchin needs to start running ads featuring this immediately.

Contrary to what a lot of people believe, the majority of West Virginians are *not* "hicks".

And gotten people that looked like that. Probably wouldn't even have to have them read a script to bash the Dems, either. Dr. Lizardo is right in one respect - Pennsylvania is Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with Alabama in between.
