Indonesian volcano unleashes biggest eruption yet (Blast was 3 times the size of 1st one last week)

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia — Indonesia's Mount Merapi erupted with its biggest volcanic blast yet Wednesday, sending searing hot gas clouds up to six miles away.

The blast followed an earlier eruption that sent the clouds down the volcano's scorched flanks. No casualties were immediately reported.

At least 38 people were killed when the volcano first erupted last week, and about 70,000 people fled to shelters.

Authorities were forced to move refugee shelters further away from the volcano, near Yogyakarta on Java island, a vulcanology official said.

1. Damn, Turborama
How are the other volcanos on the 'ring' doing? While Merapi has been the most active lately, I saw reports of seismic activity at volcanos throughout indonesia.

3. looks fairly busy..

I expect more activity as the polar caps keep melting. As the weight from the ice disappears, the plates adjust and are able to move a little more freely.

4. Hi, bro!

There's been a lot of seismic activity going on here over the past few months. Did you see the news about the dormant volcano that recently went off for the 1st time in 400 years? The first article I posted about it was here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x4521076

Have you seen reports of other ones?

I also posted about the original eruption of Merapi a week ago here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=102&topic_id=4588774

Ririn's friend lives in Yogyakarta (a nice city that was the capital of Indonesia for a while, I've added a map below) and sent this picture earlier.

(Sorry about the delay in replying, our cat got into a fight and we had to get his war wounds stitched up - we also had him 'done' so he won't be roaming around getting into trouble anymore. He's hobbling around and very confused now, poor boy.)

5. That would be cool, thanks in advance.
Do you know how close they are? Seeing the lava flows at night would be interesting.

12. Indonesia Volcano Erupts Again; 75,770 People Seek Shelter
Mount Merapi. In its biggest eruption since Tuesday evening, Mount Merapi ejected volcanic ash and other material over a 2 kilometers radius early on Thursday morning.

Surono, head of the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG), said the ash was being blown in a westerly direction toward Magelang in Central Java.

“We warned the aviation authorities to divert flights to Adi Sutjipto Airport, Yogyakarta,” he said.

Heavy rain overnight Wednesday triggered lahars that cascaded down the Kuning, Gendol, Woro, Boyong, Krasak and Opak rivers on the slopes of the volcano.

Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtLlpXQnenI

Compilation video someone has just put together: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nk-RDGOrZAk

Just heard on the news that heavy rain is bringing down the ash and the rivers, which are rising, have been turned into liquid cement.

Video of that here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDPdE-Al8Pg
