Tancredo, Angle, Whitman Lose After Anti-Illegal Immigration Campaigns
Source: Washington Independent

A few pieces of good news for supporters of a more inclusive immigration policy: Harry Reid beat out Sharron Angle (R), who ran a campaign that relied heavily on anti-illegal immigration rhetoric, and immigration hawk Tom Tancredo lost the race for Colorado governor.

Angle posed a serious threat to Reid, in spite of — or perhaps because of — rhetoric and advertising on immigration that frequently crossed the line into offensive territory, according to Latino groups. Angle claimed Reid supported a number of policies to help illegal immigrants and seemed to be attempting to capitalize on ethnic fears in ads that showed angry-looking Latino men set to dramatic, if untrue, statements.

Tancredo also campaigned largely on immigration policy, accusing his Democratic opponent John Hickenlooper of supporting “sanctuary city” policies that allowed illegal immigrants to stay in the country and threaten American lives. Hickenlooper won the election.

Immigrant rights advocates will also be pleased about the California governor race, where Republican Meg Whitman lost to Democrat Jerry Brown. Whitman shifted to the right during her Republican primary and received support from former Gov. Pete Wilson, the controversial figure behind California’s now-overturned Proposition 187 to exclude undocumented immigrants from state services. Whitman tried to reach out to Latino voters after her primary, but was hindered by allegations of mistreatment and illegal employment by an undocumented maid who worked for her for almost a decade.

3. They will PAY for this long term. The 'little brown ones' will never favor the GOP.
And Fox 'News' supporters are dying off in droves.

12. Yeah, I read on (gasp!) ABC online that seniors had voted Rethug by 19 point margin
Good news. They'll be dying out in droves soon enough. I'm a little brown person myself and I have children and grandchildren that are also little brown people and a few that are kinda brown--they "tan well", if you know what I mean. As in not Boehner-orange. But, the writing is on the wall for the GOP and Fixed News. Their base has always been it's over 65, pre-Civil Rights flat-earthers. Good riddance, asswipes.

4. LOL. I'm sure the OP would love to see this Democratic route as a referendum *in favor* of cheap
labor.

10. No but there were "A few pieces of good news for supporters of a more inclusive immigration policy"
as the article stated. Just "a few pieces of good news" amidst the rout.

The rest of the rout was "bad news" which will bring in conservative repubs and teabaggers who will focus on "securing the border" and "attrition through enforcement" which will leave a pool of millions of easily-exploitable illegal workers around for employers to take advantage of for years to come. It is no wonder that organized labor is in favor of "comprehensive reform" that includes a path to citizenship as a means to reduce this pool rather than the repubs' strategy (vindicated by the rout) which leaves this pool intact.

So we may agree that this was a referendum on "cheap labor" and the repubs and teabaggers won, even if there were ""a few pieces of good news" such as the defeats of Angle, Tancredo, and Whitman.

14. Not if those "supporters" simultaneously support the economic framework (e.g. NAFTA, WTO) that
devastated these workers' home country in the first instance. :hi:

16. Not sure what your "not if" refers to. It's NOT good news that Angle, Tancredo, and Whitman lost IF
the Democrats that beat them (but not the teabag trio themselves?) support an "economic framework" that includes NAFTA, WTO? Sounds like you may have found yourself some new buddies. :)

18. The "if" referred to the chances of improving the lives of migrant workers
while simultaneously supporting neo-liberal trade policies that have devastated the economies of the countries they are fleeing.

"Sounds like you may have found yourself some new buddies. "

Well, if you'd like to play that game, your position has always drawn the support of the hard right:

No friend like an old friend, eh? :hi:

21. You're the one saying that the defeat of Angle, Tancredo, and Whitman may NOT be a good thing IF ...
Don't believe I have ever said that about any repub - teabagger or otherwise - and certainly not about ol' Georgie boy.

29. The "pretzel" is in the mirror. You're justifying your reservations about the teabag trio's defeat
by Democrats by using my "neo-liberal economics". How do you characterize the brand of economics espoused by the tea party threesome just defeated? Superior to that of the Democrats they lost to?

Perhaps it is true that the tea party position on immigration and trade is potentially appealing to many on the left. Your "not...if..." reaction to the trio's defeat by Democrats seems to be evidence of that.

Who knows what possibilities for cooperation may present themselves in the future. The teabaggers can work on their "free trade/cheap labor" repub party to convince them to curtail trade and immigration, while you work on the "neo-liberal" Democratic Party to achieve the same. With some common ground you both stand a better chance of achieving your goals. Congratulations. :)

30. Nonsense. My only reservation is with rightwing of the Democratic Party declaring victory.
When their blue dog policies have been roundly rejected by the electorate.

Your economics are identical to those of George W. Bush, The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Archer Daniels Midland corporation. You have little room to play "guilt by association"! :hi:

11. Glad those states displayed some sense on this issue. Unfortunately . . . . . .

Here in Georgia, the GOP swept by doing everything but burning crosses on Stone Mountain (where the Klan used to rally not that long ago). Even the Democratic gubernatorial candidate was hostile to Latinos. The whole thing was sickening, but most voters were orgasmic with their hatred.
