Christine Assange fears assassination of son
Source: Sunshine Coast Daily (Australia)

THE Sunshine Coast mum of WikiLeaks creator Julian Assange fears her son may be assassinated for leaking hundreds of thousands of secret US government documents.

Christine Assange, who lives near Noosa, told the Daily she felt the same way the mother of a soldier would feel about her son’s work.

=snip=

Mrs Assange moved to the Coast five weeks ago and said she was worried for her son, who is believed to be in hiding in London.

“I am concerned for his welfare in the same way that a soldier’s mum would be worried,” she said. "The work he’s doing is dangerous for him. I have to live with the fact that that phone call that comes in could be the one. At the same time I’m happy that he’s doing something he believes in. The fact that Julian is famous is absolutely irrelevant to me.”

1. I suspect there are any number of people who would like
Assange dead. If it happens, it will be difficult to guess who ordered it.

11. "Some one like Assange"?
What is he like? Do you know him?

Oh you mean because he leaked sensitive government documents that he must be such a scoundrel that he would stoop to that.

And what good would it do him? The authorities would them be able to use the excuse of "locking him up for his own safety".
Also he most likely has plenty of actual plots being fomented at the moment around the world, I don't think he has to prove he is at risk.

4. can someone answer a quick question for me?
i didn't follow the story from the beginning, and now i can't figure this out -- is assange an american or an australian?

i tried google etc. but they seem to assume you already know

all this time i thought he was australian but then they talk abt trying him for treason in america, i'm not quite sure how unless he's american?

i assume the swedish charges are just "gotcha"

And the treason thing against him is bullshit.

I think you'll find this conversation I posted in the videos forum an informative catch up: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x531018

10. Depends on how much more stuff he has to release ...
and what damage they know could be done to them --

But it seems this should make clear to us all how much we need to end

this secret government -- "national security" for the MIC --

national insecurity for the public!!

And the many countries we've attacked !!!

mind is drug money laundering -- but who would touch that!!

31. likely not actually drug money issues...
because that would actually be rather ho-hum. Banks, large major US banks, get caught on that all the time (like 1 or 2 top-10 banks yearly) and the penalties are not as severe as you would expect. I'm only surprised its' not more newsworthy when it happens.

It's just fines (like a few million for a .5B in profits) and agreement to increased short-term governmental oversight and monitoring as long as you're cooperative, seize the assets and provide information. No need to even testify. It benefits the DEA more to light-slap the banks because they want the cooperation and the disruption the asset seizure causes.

34. Obama just put LEW -- formerly an exec at Citigroup as head of OBM ...!!!
Forget what their particular crimes were -- but there were some charges

against them -- no guilt admitted -- just fine, of course.

But our major banks are laundering huge amounts of drug money ---

now, here's the question .... will our government now be laundering huge

amounts of drug money?

Obama is doing the same thing W/GOP have always done -- put the FOX in charge

of the chicken coop!! This appointment is as outrageous as DLC/Rahm ...

Geithner, Summers ... etal!!

27. Here's a precedent ....
'I'm on Interpol's most wanted list, but the police won't arrest me'
Briton ranked alongside war criminals and genocidists for failing to return hire car

By Cahal Milmo, Chief Reporter

Saturday, December 12 2009

=snip=

Mr Bassett told The Independent: "The whole thing is like some sort of Orwellian nightmare. I am the first to admit that I didn't deal with the hire car properly. I left the car with a friend after losing my job and being told I had to leave the country. I'm sure it would have resulted in a few missed payments before it finally got back to the company. But is that any reason at all to list me among the most dangerous people in Britain or the world?

"I am guilty of a minor offence that I knew nothing about until I had an email from my father this week saying I'm wanted by Interpol. I have had no contact from the car company or the Dubai authorities and yet they can place my name on this list. I'm in a state of legal limbo – I don't have the sort of money it takes to fight this in somewhere like Dubai. I had to leave because my visa was cancelled. I could be on that list for ever."

Mr Bassett, 39, is wanted for fraud, according the Interpol arrest bulletin, known as a Red Notice, issued against him by Dubai police, which also details his date and place of birth and full name.

He is one of thousands of ex-pats who have quit the troubled emirate after a drastic change in their personal circumstances caused by the collapse of the city's property boom. Authorities in Dubai have found more than 3,000 luxury cars parked outside the international airport in recent months, left behind by jobless foreign workers who could no longer afford the payments on the top-of-the-range Porsches, BMWs and Mercedes, and did not want to risk imprisonment by defaulting on loans.

and I have damned few of those these days. God only knows he isn't the perfect person, but none of us are, and what he's doing, alas, NEEDS to be done. Yes, these leaks will cause sad harm to some, but the government has harmed MANY more by its own criminal behavior. Ms Bigmack

13. Personally I worry more about Mrs. Assange
Julian has that "insurance file" which should be a good deterrent to his own assassination. But what if somebody kidnaps her and holds her hostage? Using his insurance might not be such an attractive option for him then.

28. Russia (or anyone with money on the table) would kill his mom and kid
with out a second thought. All the politics and drama are just that. Bullshit to keep you entertained.

If the money is right someone will kill everyone he has ever done business with (his staff and conspirators), his family, they even kill people who owe him money.

The value of life varies depending on who you piss off.

Really, he is in a dangerous space with no friends.

gradual change -- but very clear at this point.

Trust Assange has some protection -- I'd like to see him stick around.

Agree -- thought it was mainly the right wing in Congress going nuts on this -- happened to see

some of them on C-span the other day, but someone else commented that Dems were also joining in.

Can only conclude that most of them have something to worry about.

29. Whistleblower is a legal term, it does not include espionage
so Bradley is not a whistle blower, his is a felon. They are about as similar as consensual sex and rape. There is a difference.

30. What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander
The previous Wikileaks release of intel field reports with unredacted names of Afghan informants put a number of lives in danger of Taliban retaliation.

Guess Mom now knows how the families of those informants feel. I suspect Julian is likewise always looking over his shoulder, just as those outed informants probably are doing.
