Senate Dems to follow House on tax cuts
Edited on Thu Dec-02-10 05:32 PM by ProSense
Source: CNN

Washington (CNN) – Senate Democrats may soon follow the House Democrats lead and bring tax cut votes to the Senate floor.

According to Jim Manley, spokesman Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, those votes could take place either Friday or Saturday.

Senate Democrats are talking about at least two votes. First, the bill the House passed today to permanently extend tax cuts only for those making $250,000 or less. And then New York Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer's idea to extend tax cuts for those making up to $1 million.

It's also possible Republicans may get a vote on their goal of extending all tax cuts for all tax brackets permanently.

10. Really? Then why is Obama compromising before he's even asked to compromise?
He acts as if the GOP is holding the Nation hostage and that the Dems are helpless victims.

14. News outlets are even reporting it that way. They know the deal is done.
It was done before it started. I said 3-4 months ago they would extend tax cuts for the rich. Progressives in the House could stop it, would love to see them put up a fight. This is not deficit neutral so the House has to pass it as well.

13. What are you talking about?
The nuclear option was for doing away with the filibuster. It has never been done period..

16. Wrong, you're thinking of reconciliation. These tax cuts are not deficit neutral so
they cannot be passed in reconciliation.

19. ????
Deficit neutral = when your tax increase offsets your spending. If raising the tax on the "wealthy" will reduce the deficit by $700 billion, then that is $700 billion that can be used for spending (or better, increased payments on interest on debt, etc), instead of the spending being slashed and burned in order to keep in balance with the continued reduction of revenue.

20. Senate won't pass a bill without the tax cut for the wealthy. I doubt they even
get to vote on the House Bill.

I'm simply saying the Senate can't go alone, they will need the House to vote on whatever they pass.

12. HOW?
When Republicans have a permanent filibuster in place. How can they even get a bill to the floor for a vote? Don't see it happening myself..
